United for Iran (U4I) is a nonprofit based in the San Francisco Bay Area working to advance civil liberties in Iran by advocating for human rights, supporting civil society, and engaging citizens through technology. Two of our longest running projects are the Iran Prison Atlas (IPA) and IranCubator. IPA is a dynamic database that tracks and publicizes the prosecution and imprisonment of Iran’s political prisoners. IranCubator is a technology incubator that supports the development of secure mobile applications that protect and empower persecuted populations inside Iran. Since 2017, IranCubator supported the creation of mobile apps that directly empower Iranian citizens to connect, organize and disseminate critical information. Learn more at www.united4iran.org

 

Job Description

The Project Manager will play a critical role in implementing and executing United for Iran’s innovative human rights and technology work. They will work with the program and technology teams, often in Persian, to support flagship projects like the Iran Prison Atlas and IranCubator, as well as new projects. This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic activist to join a growing organization and directly support human rights and technology in Iran. Candidates preferably work from the U4I office in Berkeley, California. 

 

Job Responsibilities

The Project Manager will have the following responsibilities:

 

  • Simultaneously manage consultants and partner relationships on multiple complex projects
  • Manage relationships, workstreams, and communication between U4I staff and contractual software developers to ensure seamless product development and release
  • Oversee and implement all product testing, and identify and advocate for all critical bug fixes and product enhancements 
  • Develop informational and support content for U4I technical and programmatic products, including database support, FAQs, policies, and more
  • Draft program content for grant reporting, development, and communications 


Job Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:


  • Impeccable written and verbal fluency and strong communication skills in Persian; working verbal and written fluency in English
  • Comfort and experience with Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
  • A proactive problem solver with strong attention to detail and passion for spotting and fixing issues
  • A proven track record of managing several complex projects and stakeholder relationships simultaneously
  • Experience working with product development, product testing, or similar technical processes. Particularly working on apps, websites, and IT communication platforms 
  • A strong commitment to human rights and access to technology
  • 3+ years relevant work experience 
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience


Optional bonus qualification:

  • Experience writing about technology or technical products in Persian and/or English
  • Experience in grant management and development
  • Experience with website administration and google analytics 
  • Basic understanding of the complexities of Iranian politics and policy, Iran-US, or Iran-EU relations
  • Working knowledge of human rights
  • Research skills
  • Basic technical understanding of app development
