POSITION DESCRIPTION

KLVG Campaign Organizer

Reports to: Keep Long Valley Green Executive Committee

Location: Los Angeles, California

Status: Part time/Temporary

Salary Range: Negotiable

Campaign Overview: In 2018, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power announced it would be eliminating irrigation allotments for leaseholders in Long and Little Round Valleys, which are located in Mono County. These allotments, which have historically been up to 5 acre feet per year, are critical in maintaining the rich meadow landscape that currently exists in Long and Little Round Valleys.

If the proposed changes are allowed to take place, it would impact over 6,500 acres of meadow and wetland habitat. These affects would be catastrophic. The impacts include, but are not limited to, losses in native vegetation and the proliferation of non-native grasses and shrub, impacts to the native biomass, including invertebrate and amphibian life, degradation of agricultural and grazing lands, possible impacts to recreational fisheries and fish habitat, increased risk of fire and airborne particulate, and cultural devaluation of native tribal lands. The area also supports nesting for the bi-state sage grouse, which is a California species of special concern.

In response to this threat, a coalition of local groups has formed. This group includes members from the local ranching community, various environmental non-profits, community groups, and native tribes, who are all working together to Keep Long Valley Green.

Purpose: The Keep Long Valley Green coalition seeks a Campaign Organizer to lead our campaign outreach efforts in the metropolitan Los Angeles area.

The Campaign Organizer will also play a hands-on role in communications and digital media, leading local press outreach, guide digital strategy and develop messaging and marketing materials in collaboration with other staff, partners and external consultants/vendors.

The Campaign Organizer will craft grassroots campaigns, and liaise with elected leaders to introduce, and solicit support for Keep Long Valley Green campaign goals and objectives. Candidates must be strong writers, have excellent research skills, and comfortable working under multiple, competing deadlines.
