Position Summary

StreetCred's mission is to build prosperity and improve health and health equity for families and children by leveraging trust in health care providers and empowering people to confidently navigate financial systems. StreetCred, a program of Boston Medical Center, has been operating free tax preparation services in pediatric clinics since 2016. The program successfully scaled from one site in Boston to a national technical support network (the Medical Tax Collaborative) of 30 health clinics and hospitals in 15 states & D.C., which has provided over 3,900 families with free tax preparation services. Within our network, we have returned over $8.5 million. Our suite of services also includes financial coaching and child savings account services.

This role focuses on empowering families to take advantage of free money available to them (tax credits and seed money for tax-advantaged child savings accounts) while also empowering them to work toward financial goals via individualized financial coaching. Working closely with the StreetCred team, the VISTA member will strategically design a program that prescribes economic opportunities to families as a part of their routine health care visits. The program expects to benefit 200 patients in year 1, 300 patients in year 2 and 400 patients in year 3.

The Americorps VISTA role is a full-time, one-year assignment with the expectation of starting in summer 2021. To apply for this position, one does not already need to be an approved Americorps VISTA member.

This step is critical to building organizational capacity to sustain the project in the long term.

AmeriCorps VISTA tasks include: creating a system for volunteer recruitment, training, and management; working with the clinic operations and IT teams to embed education about and connection to the services into the regular clinical workflow; creating a data monitoring system with an evaluation plan; writing research protocols and obtaining approvals; conducting a landscape analysis of opportunities for sustainability, including researching opportunities for funding, creating a supporter newsletter, and assisting with grant writing.
