The Center for Court Innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a more effective and humane justice system by performing original research and helping launch reforms by guiding justice innovators, nationally and internationally. The Center creates operating projects that have been documented to reduce the use of jail and prison, assist victims of crime, and strengthen communities.

The Red Hook Community Justice Center (RHCJC) is the nation’s first multi-jurisdictional community court, hearing criminal, housing and family matters under one roof with a single judge. RHCJC's mission is to solve community problems: strengthen families, assist at-risk youth, prevent evictions, address crime when it occurs, and work to prevent crime before it takes place. Participants can be linked to a full range of on-site and community-based social services, including drug treatment, mental health services, peacemaking, GED, youth opportunities, and more. 

RHCJC is seeking an Intake Specialist to work within its Alternatives to Incarceration department. Reporting to the Senior Intake Specialist, the Intake Specialist is primarily responsible for conducting intake screenings, scheduling clients for community service and social services, monitoring and reporting on compliance for court purposes, and facilitating a range of group-based interventions. As one of the first faces greeting clients after coming through court, the Intake Specialist also helps to set a welcoming, respectful, and positive tone with clients that establishes trust, respect, and clear expectations for clients as they move through the process.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct intake sessions and needs-based screenings for mandated and voluntary participants;
  • Help participants process their experience with the justice system and orient them to Red Hook Community Justice Center’s work and programming;
  • Explain program requirements and expectations to participants;
  • Schedule and reschedule clients for community service and social services;
  • Monitor and report on compliance for court purposes;
  • Provide referrals to participants for additional voluntary services;
  • Conduct ongoing outreach to participants keep them engaged;
  • Maintain appropriate client records in electronic databases and hard files;
  • Participate in court proceedings to fill in for the Resource Coordinator, as needed for criminal and family court;
  • Facilitate psycho-educational groups;
  • Assist with the development of group interventions, including curriculum development and updates;
  • Provide basic case management services to participants to address needs such as housing, employment, and educational and vocational needs, as well as and other challenges in a participant’s life;
  • Participate in staff meetings and other professional development opportunities;
  • Attend community-based events and meetings to learn about community issues and raise awareness of the Justice Center’s services.
  • Assist with other departmental operations as needed, such as developing referral procedures and data tracking.

Qualifications:  The ideal candidate will have a minimum of an Associate’s degree or 3 years’ experience as an intake specialist or in a similar role. Candidates must be able to effectively work with diverse client populations as a team member in a diverse setting, as well as collaborate with on-site partner agencies and court personnel. Candidates must be able to work in a fast-paced, multi-priority environment. Candidates must have strong interpersonal skills that foster an environment of mutual trust and respect with clients. Bilingual (English-Spanish) fluency required. People who are formerly incarcerated or those with experience in the justice system are strongly encouraged to apply.
