The National Women’s Law Center seeks a highly organized and detail-oriented candidate for a new position—Media Associate—that will entail taking charge of the vast majority of press requests in a timely and efficient manner.


Every day the National Women’s Law Center routinely receives a large volume of time-sensitive requests from print, radio, TV and online outlets on a broad range of issues that we cover. The Center attributes its impressive track record of securing extensive high-level press coverage to its ability to respond quickly and accurately to reporters’ needs and tight deadlines.


The Media Associate will coordinate and prioritize the requests as they arrive, promptly schedule interviews with appropriate in-house experts and set up prep sessions before the interviews are conducted, and proactively follow-up with colleagues who have not responded to urgent requests that require immediate attention.


We are looking for an energetic and consummate team player who gracefully navigates a fast-paced office that routinely deals with multiple deadlines, enjoys the challenges of engaging with press, and stays poised under pressure. The Media Associate will report directly to the Senior Media Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Field press requests quickly (both via email and phone);
  • Immediately alert relevant experts via email about press requests that fall into their area of expertise and include pertinent information about the request;
  • Schedule press interviews, confirming the time with both the reporter and our expert;
  • Determine when prep sessions are needed and schedule them in advance of high-visibility interviews;
  • Assemble background research on outside talking heads who will participate on a televised or audiotaped panel along with an NWLC expert and send concise bullet points to the press team and the in-house expert who is fielding this request as part of a basic prep protocol;
  • Identify new reporter/producer talent, noting the beats they cover and adding “new” journalists to our current media lists that are organized by subject areas and noting transfers of reporters to different beats and/or outlets, and alert NWLC press team so they can nurture relationships with these journalists;
  • Proactively identify new media opportunities and research journalists’ focus and approach, along with new outlets and new features that align with our expertise, for the press team to pursue;
  • Support timely and accurate reporting of metrics for press coverage each month, including providing a breakdown of coverage secured for each issue area and noting specific coverage in pre-selected outlets.
  • Secure an in-house location for TV crews who tape interviews at our office and coordinate logistics w/TV producers.
  • Other duties as assigned.




The candidate must have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • At least two years of professional experience, especially in communications, organizing, or advocacy.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience and judgment working both collaboratively and independently.
  • The ability to be self-directed, work well with competing priorities, and meet deadlines.


Compensation and Benefits

A minimum salary of $47,500.00 will be provided to the successful candidate having a Bachelor’s Degree and two years of relevant experience.  Compensation will be both competitive and commensurate with the successful candidate’s background and experience.
