The Ideal Candidate

A cheerful fundraiser, you thrive on building relationships of shared values, trust, and respect that lead to passionate, committed donors and sustained gifts. A generalist, you can and have done it all, from grant writing to special events to communications, but your real love is individual giving. Engaging appeals, warm newsletters, and attention to details all demonstrate your respect for donors. You are experienced in asking for gifts and have prepped others, including board members, to do so. You are confident, collaborative, and strategic, focused on listening more than talking, and willing to do what needs to be done, from creating the annual fundraising plan to stuffing envelopes. You want to expand your leadership skills at a place where your efforts make a real difference.

H.O.M.E.

Housing Opportunities and Maintenance for the Elderly (H.O.M.E.) is a one-of-a-kind Chicago organization that seeks to foster joy, connection, and independence for Chicago’s low-income seniors, helping them maintain their independence by providing a home upkeep and repair service, shopping bus, moving assistance and three affordable apartment buildings where seniors can live comfortably in an intergenerational environment. Characterized by a warm and collaborative culture, solid programs and financials, a committed staff, board and donor base—all while receiving less than 10% of its $1.7 million operating budget from state and federal sources—H.O.M.E. is well-positioned for the future, including its growth and expansion-focused strategic plan and future capital campaign.

The Opportunity

The Director of Development, in collaboration with the ED, Board, and Development Associate, leads all private fundraising efforts to raise nearly $1 million annually from individuals, foundations, corporations and community groups. A senior leader at H.O.M.E., the DOD sets fundraising strategy with the ED, engages and supports the Board in fundraising, and manages a staff member and interns. The DOD directly focuses and executes on individual giving, including events and fundraising communications; and manages foundation relations and grant writing. The DOD balances maintaining current donors with expanding H.O.M.E.’s donor base. The right candidate brings the philosophy that asking people for money is offering them the opportunity to invest in the work of an organization that improves individual lives and makes systems more just.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of professional experience with increasing managerial responsibility
  • At least 3 years of direct fundraising experience, including working with board members to achieve goals; capital campaign experience preferred
  • Outstanding communication skills, versatile and able to write to a variety of audiences
  • Flexible and adaptable, able to easily move between strategy and execution
  • Strong technical skills including database management (Raiser’s Edge a plus), social media savvy, and presentation skills
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in related field preferred
  • A passion for the mission and vision of H.O.M.E., including respect and care for low-income seniors and building diverse and inclusive communities in Chicago
