Job Title: Director, Public Policy & Advocacy

Reports to: Founder, Co-Directors

Supervise: Organizers, Consultants


Overview:

• Provide strategic direction and support to the organization on our public policy and advocacy efforts, including All of Us or None.

• Serve as a member of the Management Team, providing input and support on other organization matters as requested.

• Assist in raising ANWOL’s profile around women and criminal justice reform issues

• Supervise our Voter Education efforts.

• Assist in the leadership development projects.


Primary Policy Duties

• Identify and plan for specific policy goals, long and near term, legislative and organizing, locally and statewide, from concept through implementation.

• Guide the organization’s efforts to establish a Sacramento presence, develop legislative expertise, and work effectively in the state capitol. Travel to Sacramento will be required.

• Ensure that the policy team or other ANWOL staff are able to work closely and effectively with elected officials and key sector stakeholders, and that the priorities and concerns of ANWOL are represented at important tables, committees, coalitions and on special campaigns.

• Identify key emerging national efforts on criminal justice reform and women in reentry for ANWOL to join or lead.

• Manage our Voter Education campaigns, supervising consultants.

• Develop and direct campaign strategies for All of Us or None chapter, while increasing participation in the chapters.

• Develop and supervise individual work plans for policy and advocacy team and All of Us or None staff.


Team Development/Leadership

• Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.

• Ensure that staff members receive timely and appropriate supervision, training and development.

• Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities and deliverables, set objectives, establish priorities.

• Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach.


Qualities and Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in public policy, law, communications, business administration or related field, including related employment experience. Advanced degree preferred.

• Progressively responsible experience in the non-profit sector.

• Possess a high degree of commitment to social justice, with high level diplomacy skills and political savvy.

• Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with elected officials.

• Superior management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers.

• Relevant experience working with programmatic professionals; respect for the work of program staff.

• Have knowledge of the policy and political landscape around criminal justice reform, locally, statewide and nationally.

• Have the ability to work with people of all backgrounds, including supports and opponents, moving easily between different environments.

• Have an automobile and insurance and maintain a good driving record.

• Have the flexibility to work some nights and weekends, as well as to travel both in and out of state.

It is expected that the Policy Director will immediately begin to focus on the following goals and objectives (not in any order):

• Establish a productive partnership with local officials, legislators and external constituents, advancing our goals and agenda.

• Build the reputation of A New Way of Life as a major stakeholder in conversations on mass incarceration

• Develop positive rapport with staff, providing leadership and support through this continuing phase of organizational growth.
