Facing History and Ourselves is an international, educational nonprofit organization with a mission to engage students and teachers of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice, and antisemitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry. For over 40 years, we have provided educators with professional development and best-in-class educational resources that enable students to conduct rigorous investigations of the development of difficult histories. Students explore the individual choices that led to mass violence or systemic discrimination—as well as decision-making that led to positive change—and reflect on the choices they face today and consider how they can make a difference as “upstanders,” rather than bystanders. Facing History and Ourselves is headquartered in Brookline, MA.
The opportunity; what you should expect:
The Chief Development Officer (CDO) leads all development functions for Facing History and Ourselves including individual solicitation, planned giving, corporate and foundation support, and annual campaigns. The Assistant will play an essential role in the success and function of the Office of the CDO and the entire department that includes over 35 staff members in seven regional offices and two international offices. You will work directly under the supervision of the CDO, and will frequently represent him and the organization as a whole. You can expect to interact with staff, leadership, board members, major donors, scholars, and the public. You will join a high-energy, close-knit team of development professionals and will have a front row seat to the structures and strategies that make up a successful social enterprise.
Who you are; what we are looking for:
Our ideal candidate is organized, proactive, dedicated, intuitive, thoughtful, and accurate. Success will be measured by your strategic management of the CDO’s extremely busy calendar and by how well you prepare the CDO for meetings. Equally important is how smoothly you arrange the CDO’s travel and coordinate his visits with regional offices. You will need to be proficient at taking notes and minutes, culling action items from meetings and following up on those items.
You should anticipate that the CDO’s complicated and full calendar will require you to negotiate, prioritize, and protect the schedule, which will call for tact, diplomacy, and persistence. You should expect to manage a full stream of communications coming both in and out of the Office of the CDO, and will play a crucial role in building and sustaining strong partnerships and collaborations throughout the organization and the broader community. You will be asked to contribute to the department newsletter and various other departmental projects with the aim of promoting collaboration and teambuilding. - B.A./B.S. preferred, Minimum two (2) years experience in an executive administrative support position;
- Passion for Facing History’s mission to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry through education;
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills;
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail;
- Experience working in a fast-paced educational or academic environment is a plus; experience in a global and multi-location work environment is highly desired
- Superior computer skills (MS Office Suite & Google Suite, required; database experience a plus); ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports
