Hudson Valley Justice Center (HVJC) is a not-for-profit law firm serving low-income immigrants in the Hudson Valley. We handle a broad range of civil legal matters, including housing, immigration, family law, public benefits, disability, consumer, and employment law. HVJC is currently the only organization representing non-citizens in eviction proceedings in Orange, Westchester, Dutchess, Putnam, Sullivan, and Ulster Counties. Position

HVJC has an immediate opening for a full-time Supervising Attorney based in our Newburgh Office. The Supervising Attorney will be responsible for day to day supervision of two staff attorneys and one paralegal. The Supervising Attorney shall provide direct representation to a small number of complex housing cases and handle any affirmative litigation projects directed at increasing housing stability. Additionally the Supervising Attorney shall work to further HVJC’s access to justice initiatives, legislative advocacy projects, and coordinate outreach. 

Responsibilities:

·    Supervise office staff and manage case assignments by conducting regular case reviews

·    Ensure staff comply with HVJC policies and grantor requirements, while maintaining the highest professional standards.

·    Foster staff development through one on one supervision and accompaniment to court and administrative hearings

·    Coordinate HVJC’s access to justice initiatives, legislative advocacy projects, and affirmative litigation efforts in Orange County;

·    Conduct education presentations for the community and HVJC’s community partners;

·    Coordinate with and report to the Director of Litigation regarding office management, case assignments, program compliance, and legislative advocacy efforts.

 

Requirements:

·    Member in good standing, NY Bar;

·    Spanish/English Bilingual;

·    Excellent interpersonal skills;

·    Excellent written and verbal communication skills;

·    Valid Driver License and access to a vehicle;

·    Ability to manage an office and supervise fast-paced housing cases at varying levels of service;

 

Preferred:

·        5 or more years of legal experience in housing matters or comparable practice area;

·        Previous supervisory experience;

·        Commitment to public interest work or service to the immigrant community.
