Summary

American Progress has an immediate opening for an Associate Director/Director of the Women’s Health and Rights program with the Women’s Initiative, which is part of the American Progress Inclusive Growth Department. The Women’s Health and Rights program advocates to advance policies that provide people with the ability to become a parent and to parent with dignity; to determine whether, when, and with whom to have children; to have a healthy pregnancy; and to have safe and healthy families and relationships. The team works in an interdisciplinary way to advance policies on a range of health issues that affect women and families, particularly through collaborations with other American Progress teams focused on the rights of LGBTQ people, people of color, people with low incomes, people with disabilities, and those working on other health policies.

The Associate Director/Director will be driven by American Progress’ mission “to improve the lives of all Americans through bold, progressive ideas as well as strong leadership and concerted action, with the aim of not only changing the conversation, but changing the country.”

The successful candidate will demonstrate creative thought leadership that invokes American Progress’ mission of changing the country’s approach to policies that affect women by identifying and executing on points of connectivity with the organization’s five crosscutting priorities:

  • Strengthening public health and ending the pandemic
  • Building an economy for all
  • Securing a sustainable climate
  • Advancing racial equity and justice
  • Restoring social trust and strengthening democracy

This position calls for a strategic thinker who possesses in-depth policy knowledge, particularly related to maternal and reproductive health care, public and private insurance, public health, and/or health care reform. A successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to multitask and set priorities in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities. Additionally, the candidate should possess both strong people and project management skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact well with high-level policy professionals—across the Women’s Initiative, other American Progress teams, within the Inclusive Growth Department, and external partner organizations—are essential.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day management for the Women’s Health and Rights program, develop its policy research agenda, actively participate in connecting the team’s work with American Progress’ crosscutting priorities, and situate it within the Inclusive Growth Department.
  • Conduct and support research and analysis on women’s health, reproductive health and rights, health equity, gender-based violence, and the United States’ and other countries’ health care and public health systems.
  • Provide original writing and support the team in the development of reports, issue briefs, columns, and infographics.
  • Communicate the Women’s Health and Rights program policy priorities publicly through media appearances, published op-eds, coalition participation, and engagement with lawmakers.
  • Assist with managing the team’s budget, fundraising, and other administrative tasks necessary for the team to operate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Master’s degree, Ph.D., or J.D. in a relevant field is preferred.
  • At least eight to 10 years of relevant work experience.
  • Commitment to advancing health equity and reproductive health rights and justice.
  • Experience communicating with congressional and administrative staff, state legislators, and other policy decision-makers.
  • Experience representing an organization in policy and advocacy coalitions.
  • Ability to conduct quantitative and qualitative research and writing with senior staff oversight.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with high standards of accuracy.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to balance multiple projects at once.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well on a team.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and adapt quickly to new priorities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook is required.
