The Energy and Sustainability Fellowship position is supported through an innovative partnership between Puget Sound Energy and Strategic Energy Innovations. Aimed at addressing the myriad of energy and environmental sustainability initiatives, this Fellowship model presents a distinct opportunity to shape energy efficiencies and sustainability practices across sectors and institutional roles. The Fellow will work on pressing climate and sustainability problems and be relied upon to work toward replicable solutions.

The work of the Fellow will support building and facility energy work in King County, WA government buildings and facilities, focusing on reducing energy use and corresponding greenhouse gas emissions, and encouraging clean energy development. This work will be focused on the Solid Waste, Parks, and Wastewater divisions of the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks, along with King County’s Transit department.

Role and Responsibilities:

Energy Management:

  • Energy and utility field-based audits
  • Monitoring and gathering data from county facilities
  • Facility energy site visits to document energy reduction opportunities. These opportunities will be based on site visit findings and best practices. The Fellow will have training and other support efforts to identify conservation opportunities.

Research and Data Analysis:

  • Inventory fossil fuel-consuming equipment. This includes facility site visits and construction plan drawing reviews to document all of the equipment in each facility that consumes natural gas or other fossil fuels on-site (e.g. boilers, hot water heaters, backup generators). This work is in alignment with King County’s Strategic Climate Action Plan (SCAP), and the plan’s targets to reduce fossil fuel consumption in existing facilities.
  • Develop facility-specific fossil fuel reduction plans based on equipment inventories and non-carbon based replacement technologies.
  • Publish and share reports and materials pertinent to the county’s efforts.

Grant Writing Support:

  • Solar and energy efficiency grants writing support (possible). Support county staff in the development and writing of solar energy and energy efficiency grants that may be available during the tenure of the Fellowship.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred, Master’s level coursework in engineering, design or energy systems would be ideal.
  • Related experience in fields related to energy efficiency, renewable energy, climate action planning, water conservation, and data analysis.
  • Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation to be available on-site. Site host will reimburse for travel expenses as needed.
  • Willingness to have flexible work hours, including evening audits where needed and shift daily hours with an understanding that each day will not exceed 8 hours and each week will not exceed 40 hours.
  • Ability to work independently and carry out assignments, make independent judgments and/or decisions, and discern when action at a higher level is required.
  • Must be able to effectively manage multiple projects and maintain an organized and well communicated workflow.

Benefits:
