Development Coordinator at Animal Welfare League of Alexandria

At the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, we provide care for animals - and the people who love them - throughout Northern Virginia.

In this role, the Development Coordinator will lead campaigns that contribute to the overall success of our efforts to raise funds and advance our mission. Specifically, this role will manage, track, report and evaluate specific campaigns that will recruit, cultivate and steward donors. In addition, the Development Coordinator will manage our fundraising events and participate as a key member of the development team for donor relationship building. 

While no day is typical, you can expect to be greeted by an adoptable dog in the morning as you check emails. In the morning you may connect with donors, then visit kittens in the small mammal room. During the afternoon, you may spend time brainstorming with colleagues and creating a plan to expand our Adoptaversary or Adopt the Shelter programs. Every day you'll see how your work directly impacts our community through adoptions, animal care, youth programs and community education.


The specific functions of the job will include:

DEVELOPMENT CAMPAIGN COORDINATION

As the coordinator for specific annual development campaigns, the Development Coordinator will: 

  • Recruit, steward and retain monthly donors 
  • Implement and manage peer-to-peer fundraising campaigns
  • Lead efforts to grow our Adoptaversary program, a giving program for one-year anniversary of adoptions from AWLA
  • Create activities to renew first time donors and annual donors 
  • Administer the Adopt the Shelter program
  • Drive revenue from workplace giving, by strengthening our partnership with the CFC, United Way, America’s Charities and other workplace giving organizations; promoting workplace giving; participate in workplace giving events; recognizing workplace giving donors
  • Support additional campaigns, which may include direct mail, grants and sponsorships, as requested by the Director of Development and/or Executive Director

 

DEVELOPMENT EVENT MANAGEMENT

In partnership with the Director of Development and/or other AWLA colleagues, the Development Coordinator will drive the management of fundraising events including event logistics, guest engagement, program development, day-of event management and post-event evaluation and wrap-up.

 

DEVELOPMENT REPRESENTATIVE

To support the development department and activities, the Development Coordinator will:

  • Act as a donor liaison by:  Building relationships with donors, which may include in-person visits, phone calls, emails and written correspondence; Recruit and engage with donors at events 
  • Become an expert in our database platform, Salsa Labs
  • Prospect for new donors or sponsors 
  • Manage the engagement of staff and volunteers into specific development programs 
  • Represent the AWLA by participating in events when requested
  • Support the Director of Development, Executive Director and additional AWLA colleagues with additional projects as requested 

 

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED: 

  1. Bachelor’s Degree and three years’ experience in relationship building, or a high school diploma and 5 years’ experience in fundraising and/or sales
  2. Strong communication skills, including writing, conversational and presentations
  3. Ability to handle multiple tasks in a busy work environment, while keeping focused and organized
  4. Strong customer service skills, ability to build relationships
  5. Professional demeanor and appearance
  6. Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion 
  7. Positive, can-do attitude; someone who sees opportunities instead of problems 
  8. A self-starter who can work independently and collaboratively as a key member of a small, strong team 
  9. Ethical values, ability to handle sensitive information confidentially 
  10. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word and Excel 
  11. Compassion and concern for both animals and people 
  12. Ability to pass a criminal and financial background investigation 

PREFERRED:

  1. Experience working in a development or fundraising capacity 
  2. Donor database experience (Salsa Labs preferred)
  3. Customer service experience 


 WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  1. Indoors in air-conditioned/heated office, outdoors at shelter or on-location for various activities
  2. Equipment use: PC, laser printer, copy machine, fax machine, telephone and credit card machine 
  3. Work Hours: Regular work hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Some evening and weekend hours may be required
  4. Constant interaction with people, including staff and donors
  5. Regular exposure to animals; offices often house dogs, cats or other animals

The starting salary cap for this position will be $42,000.
