Associate Director, Advocacy and Strategic Communications

The Justice Lab in the Columbia School of Social Work is hiring an Associate Director, Advocacy and Strategic Communications, to support our Youth Justice Initiatives. The Associate Director will lead the conceptualization, design, and development of various products to support place-based and advocacy work; conduct regular outreach to and support coalitions of advocates in states and localities across the country looking to make transformative change aimed at shifting away from youth prisons and making investments into communities; and work collaboratively with other YJI Communications staff to understand key issues, trends, and data that could be highlighted for media and social media to advance the youth justice system transformation mission.

Minimum Qualifications:

BA/BS degree in any Social Science required; Master’s degree in Social Work, Public Administration or Policy, Criminal Justice, Sociology or other Social Science strongly preferred.

4-6 six years of related work experience required, 8 or more preferred, with a focus on positions related to action research, policy, and advocacy.

  • Strong command of youth justice and related social policy areas; aware of historical and current trends in the field, including how jurisdictions have approached youth justice reform, and models of human justice and community investment frameworks a plus.
  • Strong track record of translating abstract requests or ideas into concrete, high-quality finished products; flexible and creative thinker who can distill complex information into key points and execute tasks with a sense of urgency.
  • Deeply committed to combating structural racism and advancing equity, including demonstrated skill, reputation, and confidence speaking about these topics.
  • Experience in public policy research and advocacy - including partnering with impacted communities and those with lived experience with systems we seek to reform - policy development, coalition building, and strategic communications.
  • Comfortable reaching out to various national, state, and local partners - from government actors and advocates to local media - to understand the current landscape and be proactive about maintaining and cultivating relationships.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (a writing sample will be needed) and can distill nuances of research in concise, accessible language.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Able to work independently on a daily basis and guide and manage the work of staff. Experience supervising and coaching staff members to meet responsibilities.
  • Sound judgement, strong interpersonal skills, willingness to learn, and a sense of humor.

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates with prior experience working in criminal or juvenile justice related fields or lived experience relating to criminal justice are strongly encouraged to apply.
