Croatan Institute is based in the research triangle region of North Carolina, with an extended team of affiliates in the South, Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and in Geneva, Switzerland. The candidate will be expected to work remotely but, if desired, can engage with the team in Durham, NC or other areas where we have affiliates.

Job Description

Croatan Institute seeks a highly skilled and experienced ArcGIS or geospatial map consultant to enhance our NC Equitable Foodshed Map resource. The Consultant will be responsible for improving and updating our existing ArcGIS map and implementing a feedback mechanism to gather valuable insights from users and stakeholders. Your primary objective will be to ensure that our geographic information systems (GIS) remain accurate and user-friendly, and to support our team’s capacity to routinely update the map.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Map Analysis and Assessment:

a. Conduct a thorough review of our existing ArcGIS map to identify areas that require updates, enhancements, or corrections.

b. Collaborate with relevant team members to understand their specific map related requirements and feedback.

2. Develop Feedback Feature and Workflow

a. Develop and integrate a feedback feature on the map, where users can share their reviews of organizations listed in the map; the workflow should include a streamlined process for users to submit feedback/reviews tagged to a specific organization or service, process for administrators to review these reviews before posted live, and steps to prevent or manage potential spam.

3. Data Management and Integration:

a. Work with staff to source, collect, and integrate relevant geospatial data from various reliable sources to keep the maps current and accurate.

b. Ensure that data layers, attributes, and spatial relationships are correctly configured for optimal functionality and usability.

c. Integrate gap analysis from HealthyFam project (if possible)

4. Map Design and Visualization:

a. Design aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly maps that provide an intuitive and informative experience for end-users, those utilizing the map.

5. Training and Support:

a. Provide training and support to internal teams on how to update the maps and the feedback mechanism.

b. Train staff to maintain detailed documentation of map updates, data sources, changes, and improvements.

c. Train staff to generate regular reports to keep stakeholders informed of map-related activities and progress.

6. Quality Assurance and Testing:

a. Conduct thorough testing to ensure the accuracy, functionality, and performance of updated maps and the feedback system.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's or higher degree in GIS, Geography, Environmental Science, or related field; or

candidate with more than 5 years of geospatial mapping experience.

• Proven experience with ArcGIS or similar software and geospatial analysis.

• Strong knowledge of cartographic principles, geodatabases, and spatial analysis.

• Proficiency in data management, data visualization, and data integration.

• Excellent communication skills to collaborate with various stakeholders and gather feedback effectively.

• Experience in implementing feedback mechanisms or user surveys.

• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Familiarity with relevant GIS technology trends and best practices.
