Placement Officer, Scholars + Young Scholars

The Placement Officer, Scholars + Young Scholars holds key relationships that allow SEEDS to be successful. The role is equal parts internal and external with professionalism and teamwork leading their work style.

This person represents SEEDS to the nation’s most selective independent schools and facilitates Scholars’ matriculation into their communities. They also build strong relationships with our scholars and their families, presenting opportunities for the families learn about the schools and for themselves to learn about the families – helping to find the right placement school for the student.


Relationships are key for colleagueship as well. This position reports to and works closely with the Vice President, Placement and Analytics and sits on a team with the Assistant Director, College Placement and Assistant Director, Program Data. They are part of the admissions process by serving on the recruitment, reading, and selection committees. In this role, communication and meeting deadlines is essential.

SEEDS – Access Changes Everything (founded in 1992 as NJ SEEDS) is a privately funded, nonprofit organization. We change the lives of motivated, high-achieving students from low-income families by transforming their educational opportunities. With 160 students per year and more than 2,900 graduates, every member of SEEDS’ 25-person main office staff and 75-person site staff understands how their work contributes to students’ success every day.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Placement-Specific Work

·      With Schools:

o  Establish, nurture, and maintain relationships with admissions officers at independent schools, locally and nationally

o  Negotiate placement for the Scholars (into grade 9) and Young Scholars (into 6th and 7th grades)




  • With Colleagues:

o  Collaborate with the Vice President to find appropriate school matches for students in the Scholars and Young Scholars Programs

o  Run SEEDS’ Common App Reading Groups: Monitor students’ progress from completing their applications and manage colleague’s participation


  • With Students and their Families:

o  Work closely with our students’ families to find the schools which are the best possible match

o  Teach Indie School 101, a course to introduce independent schools to our Scholars

o  Assist families with completing their financial aid applications (TADS, PFS, etc.)

o  Educate families on the placement process through inclusive and engaging workshops, weekly emails and information sessions


Project Management, Data, and Communications

o  Collect, compile, and maintain calendars for processes dealing with independent school access and admissions

o  Organize and run events, including all facets of the annual independent school fair, and manage expenses for these projects in line with annual budgets

o  Distribute, collect, and analyze the Annual Placement Survey

o  Utilize database to regularly track interactions with schools and students


Cross-Department Collaboration

·      Recruitment – Present admissions sessions to parents and students as a representative and advocate for SEEDS programs

·      Admissions & Programs – Participate in admissions process when requested: College and independent school applications, reading essays, student financial reviews, communicating with parents regarding application status,

  • Programs - manages joint department meetings and communicates regularly with the Programs team

·      Be a thought partner for your team, across departments, and agency-wide


Like everyone at SEEDS, this role will perform other organization-wide duties and responsibilities, as needed.


Important Considerations

This position requires:

·      Four weeks each year traveling to visit program sites and partner schools

·      Work on some weekends and evenings

·      A valid driver’s license and use of a personal vehicle for business purposes (reimbursed)

·      Use of a personal cell phone (reimbursed)


Position Qualifications

·      Bachelor’s degree required

·      Experience working in one or more of the following: Familiarity with college campus/independent school environment; college counseling, advocating for low-income students; or other applicable experience

·      A strong sense of professionalism and ability to represent SEEDS to external partners

·      Comfort with public speaking, speaking to parents and school professionals

·      A fast learner with databases and technology; knowledge of FileMaker, a plus


Salary Information

·      The salary for this role has a range that starts at $45,000.
