Intro/Program Description: Goddard Riverside Community Center (GRCC) is a leading Manhattan community-based agency with an annual operating budget of $30 million. Star Learning Center, a program of GRCC, is a year-round tutoring program for students in grades 2 through 12. Each student at Star is matched one-to-one with a volunteer tutor. Tutors are given an orientation to the Center and their individual students, and receive ongoing coaching and support. Students work with their tutors once a week for two hours. Students and their families work closely with Star staff to meet students’ academic needs. Star also connects students with other GRCC programs and outside resources to enable them to reach their full potential.

Purpose of Position: Provide academic and outreach support to the students and families of Star Learning Center.

Schedule: Monday through Friday 10 am – 6 pm (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday); 11 am – 7 pm (Monday, Wednesday)

Role, Responsibilities, and Essential Duties

  • Schedule all testing appointments, administer post-tests for current students, and write testing reports
  • Organize and maintain STAR’s library, including researching new book titles and tutoring materials, sorting donations, and working closely with library clerk
  • Research and update resource materials for families on free and low-cost summer camps, tutoring programs (including those providing special education support), SAT/SHSAT prep programs, and programs for academically-accelerated students; assist families to complete applications to summer and school-year programs
  • Provide information on summer jobs, internships, service opportunities, leadership and academic programs to high school students
  • Assist Associate Director with tutor recruiting and interview process
  • Assume primary responsibility for arranging substitute tutors for students, including all correspondence; maintain spreadsheets of students needing tutors and tutor holiday absences
  • Support student-tutor pairs during tutoring hours by providing materials to tutors, showing tutors how to locate and track students’ classwork and homework/online assignments, and encouraging participation in a range of reading and writing activities
  • Coordinate Star student participation in the Beacon High School Access program
  • Publish Star’s annual literary magazine and plan weekly writing prompts for students
  • Create holiday/book contests and find prizes; prepare holiday and end-of-year gifts for students and tutors, and organize volunteer and family appreciation event

Qualifications/Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree; major or coursework in education or social work preferred
  • Minimum two years’ experience working with school-aged students
  • Prior classroom and/or tutoring experience preferred

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Fluency in written and spoken Spanish
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have/be:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Docs

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift boxes
