The Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation, of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), seeks a Public Programs Manager for the College Park Aviation Museum (CPAM). Located at the nationally significant College Park Airport (CPA), the museum interprets the history of this active general aviation airport and incorporates science, technology, engineering, art, and math (S.T.E.A.M) into exhibits, programming for all ages (children, adults, seniors), school tours and outreach for schools and community organizations.


The College Park Aviation Museum is a 7-day/week operation with a team of 20 – 25 staff, both full and part-time. The museum is part of the Natural and Historic Resources Division (NHRD) within the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR).

 

Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director, the Public Programs Manager develops and presents interpretive programming as pertains to the history and science of the aviation field. The Public Programs Manager is responsible for the planning, implementation, and follow-up of public programs with occasional outreach. This position is a full-time career staff position working Tuesday-Saturdays.

 

Examples of Important Duties

 

Public Programming and Events

  • Plans and develops public programs that engage with the community.
  • Evaluates programs and events and compiles various monthly or annual reports.
  • Oversees signature events with the support of part-time staff such as Santa Fly-In, College Park Day, etc.
  • Plans and implements programs and interpretive projects with Collections/Exhibit staff on exhibit related programming.
  • Develops short and long-range goals for the Public Programs Department and works together with the Director and Assistant Director on development and implementation of Strategic Plan.
  • Represents the museum at professional conferences and meetings.

Community & Outreach  

  • Develops new audiences through beneficial partnerships with external and internal agencies, community groups and cultural organizations through innovative programs, social media, and technology. 
  • Conducts public programs throughout Prince George's County at a range of locations including community centers, libraries, etc.

Administration and Operation

  • Supervises weekend/event staff.
  • In coordination with the Assistant Director, schedules volunteers and part-time staff to work programs and outreach.
  • Serves as Support Manager on Duty on Saturdays.

Rentals

  • Responsible for scheduling, staffing, and the overall management of rentals as well as enforcing the rental contract and policies set in place with support from part-time staff. 
  • Schedules, implements, and facilitates birthday parties on weekends.

Marketing

  • Works with the M-NCPPC marketing department to develop the museum calendar of events and other print pieces.
  • Creates brochures, flyers, and postcards for program promotion.
  • Maintains the museum mailing list.
  • Updates electronic sign.
  • Coordinates photography of events with volunteers and M-NCPPC marketing department.
  • Updates museum website and calendar.

Other duties assigned

  • Assists in general museum operations
  • Serves on Exhibit Committee
  • Assists with educational-grant preparation, administration, and reporting

Work Conditions

Works in an office and the field. Occasionally works nights and evening hours.

 

Salary commensurate with experience.
