The Mountaineers was formed in 1906 to explore the peaks and waterways of the Pacific Northwest. Our mission is to enrich lives by helping people explore, conserve, learn about, and enjoy the lands and waters of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Our dedicated staff and volunteers are deeply committed to getting people outside to experience the power of the outdoors all while advocating for access and protection of recreational lands.

Campers ages 6-12 are invited to join The Mountaineers for a week-long summer camp packed with traditional camp games, songs and a heavy dose of outdoor adventure. Each week consists of rock climbing, outdoor skills, crafts, and swimming. Additionally, every week has a field trip and outdoor adventures relating to the given theme, such as kayaking, hiking, climbing, and rafting. As a summer camp staff, we will work hard, long days to provide a meaningful experience for each week of camp…and have a lot of fun doing it!

Position Description:

Camp Counselors play the most important role in supplying a positive, valuable, safe experience for Mountaineers summer campers. They are directly responsible for the daily supervision of a group of 8-12 campers ranging in age from 6-12. They design and teach varying outdoor curriculum, including first aid, navigation, and safe methods of recreating outdoors. Camp Counselors create an enthusiastic and welcoming environment for their group of campers and have seemingly limitless amounts of energy.

What you will do:

  • Provide a meaningful camp experience, keeping campers happy, healthy, safe, and having fun.
  • Foster a positive sense of community within the group and seek ways to include all campers.
  • Plan creative outdoor activities based off of curriculum for group of campers.
  • Enthusiastically teach games and activities to group of campers.
  • Fearlessly participate as a leader during large group and all camp activities.
  • Assist in the set up and break down of camp.
  • Attend weekly staff meeting.
  • Ensure The Mountaineers youth policies and procedures are followed and adhered to at all time.
  • Share the magic of camp with families.
  • Sing your heart out during camp assemblies.
  • Be a mentor for counselors in training.

Who you are:

  • Minimum age 18.
  • Have a high school diploma.
  • A positive, enthusiastic team player.
  • Experienced with working outdoors with youth.
  • Knowledge of quick games and time fillers to keep campers engaged during transitions.
  • Ability to pass a national criminal background and sex offender check.
  • Able to attend all of staff training.
  • Ability to work June 15 - August 21.

Preferred:

  • Climbing and belaying experience.
  • Enrollment in outdoor education or education major within university.
  • Summer camp experience.
  • Experience teaching outdoor recreation skills such as first aid, navigation, outdoor cooking, naturalist skills, kayaking, climbing, teambuilding, or photography.
  • Current CPR & First Aid Certification.

Compensation and benefits:

This position is for a full-time, seasonal employee. Regular schedule will be 40+ hours a week. Compensation ranges from $630-650/week, depending on experience. Benefits include membership in The Mountaineers.

You must be able to pass a criminal background check to work within this position. Occasionally you will be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. While you are performing the duties of this job, you will be required to stand for extended periods of time while leading youth, and must be able to hike on uneven and hilly terrain continuously for up to five miles. As a requirement of instructing youth programs you will be required to bend, squat, run, or climb.
