Director of Development

The  Director of Development is responsible for managing the organization’s fundraising initiatives with a focus on fundraising operations. This position also entails responsibilities in the general fundraising initiatives as well. Based in Washington, DC, this position will require occasional travel. The Development Manager will report to the VP, Development & Programs. 

General Duties and Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

Fundraising and Relationship Management

·        Portfolio: Manage the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of a portfolio of donors and prospects with a special focus on East Coast Corporations, Government Agencies, and Community Organizations. Increase and maintain giving within portfolio to ensure the overall APIAS fundraising goal is achieved.

·        Cultivation/Stewardship: Ensure existing funders receive consistent and regular communication and reports, and that funded programs are achieving stated objectives/outcomes. Maintain positive and productive relationships with the goal of not only maintaining but growing support in areas of organizational priority. Identify opportunities to involve the VP of Development and Programs, Executive Director and/or Board members to facilitate partnership growth.

·        Identification/Qualification: Consistently engage with and research new prospects through cold calling, RFP responses, email outreach, concept paper/LOI submissions, etc… in an effort to secure new funders. Director is responsible for their own research and initial engagement with the prospect.

·        Collaboration with Programs/Scholarships: Engage with colleagues on the Programs and Scholarships teams to ensure conversations with and proposals to funders/prospects are consistent with organizational priorities.

·        Communications: Work with the Communications team to execute donor stewardship expectations related to traditional and social media, and highlight funders/partnerships.

·        Solicitations and Reports: Produce content narrative and budgets that are reflective of donor/prospect conversations and in line with organizational priorities. Work with the Development Manager to ensure proposals and reports are submitted in a timely and accurate manner. Provide final approval and specific direction related to the proposal and report content, including the budgets.

·        Strategy: Assist the VP of Development and Programs with the overall design of Development and Programs strategy.

 

Other

·        Events and Meetings: Travel as needed to donor events and meetings. For all meetings scheduled with the VP of Development and Programs, Executive Director and/or Board Members, ensure a thorough briefing document is prepared a week in advance, outlining expectations, talking points, background information, and strategic importance. Staff events to steward and cultivate donor relationships.

·        Project Management: Serve as the project manager on activities/programs related to strategic partnerships on an as needed basis.

·        Internal Reporting: Provide weekly updates to the Development Manager via emails and the weekly Development team meeting on the progress of proposals and prospect conversations. Follow up with confirmed funders to ensure receipt of checks, signed grant agreements, scholarship requirements and other programmatic details.

 

Professionalism and Teamwork

·        Support interdepartmental collaboration, contribute to a culture of transparency, teamwork, openness to suggestions and constructive criticism

·        Encourage relationship-driven vision among all staff and departments

·        Take initiative to reach goals creatively and maintains discipline of tasks

·        Take initiative to enroll in trainings, webinars, and pursue further resources to improve skills and knowledge based in accordance with budget

·        Ensure work product meets needs of organization

·        Team with other staff to support major events

·        Ensure that project/department goals are met and adhering to approved budgets as designated by the Chief Operating Officer.
