Maintain current American Red Cross certificates (or equivalent certification) in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Responding to Emergencies, Lifeguard Training and Community First Aid and Safety as required by Lenox Hill Neighborhood House and the New York City Department of Health. Report to the Department of Health for fingerprinting, undergo annual physical examinations and TB tests, submit physical examination and TB test results to supervisor.

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, the Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of pool patrons from both an operational as well as a programmatic perspective.

Specific duties, rules and regulations include, but are not limited to, the following:


  1. “On duty” is defined as: On the pool deck -- responsible for the safety of all pool patrons -- wearing appropriate attire and constantly scanning the pool area for signs of distress.
  2. While on duty, obey and enforce all of the rules and regulations of the NYC Dept. of Health, NY State Law and Lenox Hill Neighborhood House.
  3. Provide any care or assistance required by pool patrons in distress (not to exceed the scope of the Lifeguard’s training) in keeping with the standards and guidelines of the certifying agencies (American Red Cross, American Heart Association, YMCA, etc.), and the NYC Department of Health.
  4. Each shift starts 15 minutes before the Lifeguard is scheduled to be on duty. During this time the reporting Lifeguard is responsible for checking first aid supplies, rescue equipment, communications systems, compliance with DOH regulations and pool chemistry.
  5. The Lifeguard on duty must remain on duty, and may not leave the pool for any reason, unless relieved by another certified Lifeguard. In the event of a personal emergency -- if there is no certified Lifeguard to provide coverage -- first notify your supervisor then close the pool, ensuring that all swimmers have left and that all pool doors are locked.
  6. No distractions are permitted while on duty – distractions include, but are not limited to, loud music, reading, conversation, and phone calls. The Lifeguard on duty must turn off, or reduce the volume of, any music immediately if requested by a member, guest or supervisor.
  7. As representatives of NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE, Lifeguards must be courteous and behave professionally towards members, guests and staff at all times, without allowing themselves to be distracted from pool surveillance.
  8. Report all incidents, accidents and complaints - as well as any unsafe or unsanitary conditions -- to the Aquatics Coordinator immediately, both verbally and in writing.
  9. All incidents, accidents and injuries must be described in both the Daily Pool Log and the Daily Log. In addition, the appropriate NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE report forms (Accident & Safety report for employees, Incident report for non-employees) must be completed. 


  1. Maintenance and cleaning duties must never distract from pool surveillance or interfere with ensuring member safety.
  2. Properly test and record the chlorine and pH levels at regular intervals as directed by the pool operator on duty. Immediately inform the pool operator on duty of any water chemistry adjustments required.
  3. Inspect all pool safety equipment and first aid supplies at the start of each shift to ensure that everything is correctly located and in good working condition. Immediately report any problems or shortages of equipment to the supervisor.
  4. During breaks between programs, when there are no patrons in the pool, the Lifeguard must prepare the pool for the next program as necessary -- including assisting instructors with class equipment, record keeping and sign-in sheets. The lifeguard must also ensure that all unneeded pool equipment is securely locked away.
  5. Perform all cleaning and maintenance duties as directed by the supervisor -- including, but not limited to, hosing the deck, sweeping the pool, removing any foreign objects, keeping the deck clear and vacuuming.



  1.  Assist Water Safety Instructor certified staff members by providing in-water supervision of program participants and by leading skill development or recreational activities, as necessary, in keeping with established NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE program guidelines, provided that the pool is properly supervised by an on-duty certified Lifeguard.
  2. Perform Fitness Instructor and Office Assistant functions as needed and in the manner specified by NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE.
  3. Follow appropriate NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE procedures for all personal leave requests (Vacation, Discretionary Days, Sick Time...).
  4. Participate in all NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE Aquatics Staff In-Service training, including rescue drills and accident rehearsals.
  5. Attend all supervisory, Aquatics, Fitness and NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE staff meetings.
  6. Carry out all additional duties assigned by the supervisor.
