We are seeking a Social Worker to join our team

The Social Worker provides crisis response, supportive counseling, public benefits assistance, and other social services to clients of Appellate Advocates. In conjunction with attorneys and other staff, the Social Worker supports clients and enhances legal and non-legal advocacy. 

Responsibilities:

Representational Support

• Provide crisis response to clients struggling with mental illness, substance abuse, trauma, and other serious issues;

•  Advise attorneys and other staff on social and psychological issues affecting criminal cases and clients;

•                       Work collaboratively with attorneys and other staff to enhance legal representation and staff-client relationship;

•                       Produce written reports including psychosocial histories, sentencing mitigation letters, Letters of Reasonable Assurance, etc., in support of attorneys advocating in court or with agencies on behalf of the client;

•                       Provide staff with training on clinical social work issues such as trauma, mental illness, and addiction to enhance service delivery;

•                       Visit clients in prisons and jails as necessary.


Re-entry Services

•                       Collaborate with Re-entry Program Director and Associates to provide social services, including needs assessments, for clients transitioning from incarceration to the community;

•                       Provide crisis response as necessary;

•                       Identify and provide appropriate referrals for mental health, substance abuse, and other services and resources;

•                       Assist clients in applying for and obtaining governmental benefits and supportive housing;

•                       Conduct non-legal advocacy on clients’ behalf with social services and government agencies;

•                       Network with other social services providers and agencies to enhance clients’ access to resources and services.


Qualifications:

•                       Licensed Clinical Social Work preferred, Licensed Master of social work at minimum required; 

•                       2+ years of experience assisting individuals from under-served and at-risk communities (criminal justice and/or public defender experience preferred);

•                       Knowledge of trauma-informed therapeutic approaches and crisis interventions;

•                       Knowledge of the range of issues affecting individuals involved in the criminal justice system, criminal procedure, government administration, and social service;

•                       Dedication to working on behalf of individuals involved in the criminal justice system including those suffering from mental illness and trauma, people with substance abuse problems, and non-citizens;

•                       Excellent interpersonal and writing skills;

•                       Fluency in Spanish or other languages preferred.


Physical Requirements:

This position requires performing typical office activities such as sitting for extended periods, walking in between offices, reaching into file draws and carrying papers up to 10 lbs. They must be able to travel occasionally in state to visit clients in prison.

Salary:

Competitive salary, commensurate with experience, and excellent benefits. This is a full-time exempt position.
