Jobs to Move America is seeking a full-time Strategic Researcher for its Southern Program, in Alabama or Mississippi. The Strategic Researcher will play a key role in conducting and coordinating research to support the Southern and national programs’ work to build awareness and support for equitable infrastructure practices among decision makers, policy leaders, and labor and community-based organizations across the country. The Strategic Researcher will also support community benefits agreement campaigns that encourage global manufacturing firms to commit to create family-sustaining U.S. jobs and to generate economic opportunities for low-income, communities of color, women, and other groups that have historically faced systematic barriers to accessing family-sustaining jobs.  

The Southern Strategic Researcher reports to the Southern Program Director. This position can be located in Alabama or Mississippi. The anticipated start date of this position is in May 2021. 

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research to support efforts to win comprehensive campaigns using a variety of sources, including publicly available databases and online resources
  • Conduct corporate research and develop corporate profiles
  • File Public Records Act requests and interpret public records, such as legal filings, regulatory records, real estate documents, and political campaign filings 
  • Develop community profiles, reports, fact sheets, white papers and other campaign materials and research products that illustrate key findings to a variety of audiences
  • Identify and track public subsidies connected to job and equity outcomes and investment in clean technology  
  • Help cultivate relationships with transportation agency staff, attend regular board and committee meetings, review meeting materials, and monitor agency procurements and contract compliance
  • Comply with all organizational policies and procedures, including timely attention to administrative responsibilities
  • Contribute to JMA’s organizational development, for example assisting with fundraising, providing peer evaluations, and participating in JMA staff committees (not to exceed 20% of time)
  • Develop campaign recommendations based on analysis of Public Records Act documents and other corporate research
  • Analyze existing laws and public decision-making processes to inform policy development and campaign strategy 
  • Track local and state public agency agendas and associated materials on topics related to public investments in new transportation infrastructure and manufactured equipment
  • Track current debates about relevant policy solutions, such as zero emission vehicle mandates, targeted hiring, sales tax increases to supplement funding for new transportation infrastructure 
  • Collaborate with the Southern Director and coalition partners to develop and execute research work plans to support campaign goals 

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to economic, racial, gender, and social justice movements  
  • Ability to work well in a team and take initiative. Detail-oriented and accountable to team goals and individual work plan 
  • Experience and comfort working in multicultural settings 
  • Excellent writing skills for a policy-making audience, including ability to succinctly summarize findings
  • Strong verbal communication skills and experience making presentations for a wide range of audiences, including testimonies to government agencies and to community organizations 
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Excel to execute complex formulas and to create illustrative graphs and charts. Experience with statistics to conduct data analysis 
  • Proficiency in basic qualitative research skills, including internet searches, interviews, surveys, and organizing focus groups
  • Experience analyzing policy options and components, providing recommendations on policy options
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year of prior work experience as a researcher or policy analyst. Experience as a researcher with unions, policy organizations or community groups is ideal
  • Experience analyzing corporations and industry practices regarding employment issues 
  • Experience in worker’s rights research, local government policymaking, budgeting, or public transportation 

Extra consideration will be given to candidates who:

  • Identify as persons of color, women, veterans, or formerly incarcerated persons, and/or have had experience working with one or more of those groups 
  • Have experience working in the labor movement 
  • Have a master’s degree, especially in public policy, economics, or similar fields, or equivalent experience

Salary

$51,000 - $70,000

Benefits

Compensation/Benefits:

Compensation for this role is $51,000-$70,000 dependent location and years of experience. Benefits include full health and dental benefits at no premium cost to the employee, up to $100/month cell phone reimbursement, generous time off including 12 personal days off a year, 12 paid vacation days, 12 sick days, 12 paid holidays, paid family leave and eligibility to apply for a paid sabbatical after 5 years. JMA also provides a 401(k) plan with 5% employer contribution after 6 months of employment and professional development opportunities. JMA staff are working remotely for the remainder of 2021 and receive a monthly work-from-home stipend of $75/month.
