Founded in 1999, BUILD’s mission is to use entrepreneurship to ignite the potential of youth in under-resourced communities and equip them for high school, college and career success. BUILD’s unique program offers students a four-year entrepreneurship experience designed to develop 21st Century Skills and motivate student engagement in school. Starting in 9th grade, BUILD students work with their peers and community mentors to develop business ideas, pitch to funders and launch real businesses. As students journey through high school and continue to grow their businesses, BUILD helps them explore college and career options, and assists students with the college application process. Entrepreneurship is the hook – college, career, and life success are the goals.


BUILD currently serves approximately 2,000 high school students annually at programs located in the San Francisco Bay Area, Washington DC, New York City and Boston.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Instructional Design and Evaluation, you are a critical member of BUILD’s Learning, Impact and Innovation Team, supporting staff in achieving programmatic excellence and impact. The MDS maintains and optimizes BUILD’s custom Salesforce platform ensuring that the system configuration is continually aligned with BUILD’s evolving program model by automating processes and simplifying procedures whenever possible. The MDS provides training, ongoing coaching, and technical support to the organization’s cadre of Salesforce users. Additionally, the MDS serves as a key catalyst of organizational learning and data-driven decision-making by assisting in the analysis of program data and promoting and supporting system adoption and data input, analysis, reflection, and reporting by regions


System Administration[1] 

●     Manage BUILD’s custom database on the Salesforce.com platform for all program users

●     Customize and configure Salesforce, including maintaining security protocols, user permissions, workflows, notifications and business process automations

●     Organize, maintain, and disseminate organizational reporting and dashboards for current and historical records in Salesforce and assist users in developing their own reports

●     Perform routine and basic system administration:

o  Create custom reports, dashboards, fields, and objects

o  Streamline, automate, and improve data processes using workflows and process builder

o  Troubleshoot system configurations as needed

o  Manage and implement new system configurations and customizations

o  Manage and communicate the release/enhancement process to develop and implement new applications and updates to the system

o  Administer, maintain, and optimize Salesforce platform-connected apps, and tools and system integrations (i.e. HubSpot, FormAssembly)

●     Process data uploads for staff users using Data Import Wizard or Data Loader tools

●     Diagnose and correct system issues, either independently or with technical support from software providers and outside consultants as needed

Analysis and Organizational Learning

●     Regularly analyze data and reflect back to sites, regions, program-area teams, and Development

●     Report implications for programmatic learning and improvement

●     Set up systems and processes to support accurate and timely collection, analysis, and reporting of program data

●     Contribute to BUILD’s evolving model of assessment and student-performance management

●     Analyze and report on alumni college enrollment, persistence, and graduation


Data and Knowledge Management

●     Complete regular internal system audits and prepare for and manage system upgrades, stay informed on Salesforce trends, progress, staff user experiences, and best practices

●     Provide training and day-to-day user support, and assist staff in building strategy for their Salesforce work

●     Work with user groups to continually improve their skills and the effectiveness and efficiency of their processes in the system

●     Spearhead continual system adoption and ongoing team integration, including reinforcing the rationale and value-add for system use

●     Monitor input integrity and timeliness to ensure the data is “clean” and accurately depicts student participation and performance; make and implement agreed-upon recommendations for improvement


Staff Training and Support[2] [3] 

●     Implement robust, comprehensive, and engaging Salesforce trainings for teaching BUILD’s data-management system and protocols

●     Create structures and resources to enhance staff capacity to utilize Salesforce effectively

●     Design and implement professional development to foster site leadership around data collection, reporting and data based inquiry

●     Develop and maintain customer service relationships with program staff by responding promptly to questions and feedback on the system and communicating regularly about Salesforce in context with BUILD’s service model

●     Create opportunities for Salesforce best-practice sharing across program areas and sites, assisting them in codifying those best practices around program data management and publishing them to the team


Candidate Requirements:

●     Bachelor’s Degree required

●     Experience creating systems and processes to support data collection, analysis, and reporting for program and organizational learning

●     Experience conducting quantitative and statistical analysis (2 years)

●     Experience effectively managing complex programs/projects

●     At least 2 years Salesforce experience required, up-to-Date Salesforce System Administrator Certification preferred

●     Experience designing and delivering professional development focused on the use of Salesforce as a performance management and program evaluation and improvement platform preferred

Position Details:

●     Location: Remote with potential for in-office in a Hub region - Boston, MA, Washington, D.C., New York City, NY, Oakland, CA, Redwood City, CA

●     Some travel between local sites is required. Work-related travel beyond the normal commute will be reimbursed.

●     Occasional extended travel (3-5 days) to remote sites is required during the year, as particular training and support needs arise

●     Office time can be flexible and adjusted to accommodate your needs. Occasional evening and weekend hours are also required to fulfill the duties of this position.

Should we add these general but needed areas of support: Manage all aspects of SF accessibility including adding and deleting users? Basically so they know they are currently the SF guru. I know that was one thing Nitita mentioned - not having a team to run ideas by.

agree it needs to be more clear that the first bullet point (and the whole JD) is really a standalone job with some thought partnership, not done "with" the program team
