Summary:

Vital Voices is seeking an experienced Secondary Trauma Training Consultant to develop specialized training on individual and institutional secondary trauma coping and prevention strategies. The Consultant will facilitate this training at a four-day workshop as part of a fellowship program for service providers to survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) and the refugee/migrant population in the Balkan region. The fellowship program will focus on sharing skills and knowledge in the areas of both digital security and psychosocial support for advocates and service providers. The Secondary Trauma Training Consultant will develop content and facilitate discussion related to the program’s second area of focus including, but not limited to topics such as secondary trauma, burnout, and strategies for self-care. In addition, the Consultant will provide concrete tools for individual and organizational assessments to participants to support development of long-term strategies. The work location for this position will be remote, with a four-day workshop and one in-person planning day in Belgrade, Serbia. This is a temporary position. The start date for this position is immediate and the consultancy will run through July 20, 2018.


Responsibilities:

  • Develop content on trauma support for service-providing organizations and individuals for the four-day workshop
  • Facilitate sessions on secondary trauma for a group of 15 program fellows including the following:
  • Rational detachment training: Develop tools and techniques to help program fellows do their jobs effectively without personalizing and carrying the weight of stories they hear, and facilitate training to help the group learn how to utilize those tools and techniques
  • Self-care planning: Develop sample plans and protocols that may be used by the program fellows to institutionalize strategies for trauma support in their respective organizations and networks
  • Custom training topics: Based on the results of an initial needs assessment conducted by Vital Voices prior to the workshop, provide custom training's and resources. Possible topics may include crisis response planning, identifying signs of burnout, or specific self-care activities
  • Participate in one day of planning in Belgrade, Serbia along with other expert consultants and Vital Voices Human Rights staff prior to the event
  • Liaise with the Vital Voices team in the lead up to the program


Qualifications:

  • Expertise in the causes, symptoms, and treatment of secondary trauma, preferably within the specific contexts of gender-based violence, the refugee/migrant population, and/or conflict
  • Background in providing treatment for secondary trauma in a clinical setting
  • Experience delivering an interactive and participatory pedagogy in an adult-learning environment
  • Demonstrated ability to develop & adapt program content to be applicable to various cultural contexts
  • Ability to travel to Belgrade, Serbia for the four-day workshop and one in-country planning day from July 9-13, 2018
  • Preferred experience working in international settings, especially within the Balkan region
  • Past experience working with women’s networks is desirable
