General Responsibilities:

Community Engagement is an expanded and enhanced effort to educate and involve the general public in food and social justice issues plaguing Philadelphia and is a natural extension of both the Faith Community and Development Department. The Community Engagement Manager’s primary function is to oversee and spearhead the sustainability and ongoing development of community engagement offerings at Broad Street Ministry, especially growing secular and adult programming. Community Engagement is to encompass any and all public education focused programs (including the Youth Initiative, Alternative Breaks, Day Immersions, etc.) as well as events to which we are inviting the general public for education and the arts (including lectures, panels, arts events, etc.), specifically those which are faith-based. The Manager is accountable and responsible for marketing, networking, and managing the pipeline of past, current, and future constituents of the revenue generating programs. The Manager will also oversee the Community Engagement budget, working with BSM’s senior management to set and adjust participation fees. The Manager is responsible for any additional fundraising needed to sustain Community Engagement programs.


Primary Responsibilities:


-       Programmatic Responsibilities:

o  Manage all current program offerings (Youth Initiative, Alternative Spring Breaks, Day Immersions) and quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate their opportunity for future growth.

o  Envision and strategically plan for new social engagement programs in collaboration with the Head Pastor (social justice events, advocacy, lecture series, arts events, panels, etc.)

o  Grow adult, corporate, and secular offerings for paid programming

o  Collaborate internally on program and curriculum design for all public education programs

o  Share in execution and facilitation of public education programs 


-       Development Responsibilities:

o  Works with the Development team to ensure that fundraising and marketing efforts fit seamlessly into the wider efforts of the department and organization

o  Collaborate and communicate with the Volunteer and Development departments

o  Develop new fundraising initiatives to fund staff members in addition to working towards financial sustainability, opportunity for revenue generation, and ability to offer scholarships to programs requiring participation fees

o  Team with Director of Development to grow and evolve pipeline of secular and corporate participants while maintaining and growing existing pipeline of faith-based participants

o  Manage the pipeline of social engagement program alumni as potential financial backers

o  Develop and oversee new avenues of marketing initiatives to grow participation in year-round programming, with a particular focus in expanding Fall/Winter/Spring participation

o  Collaborate with Volunteer, Development, and Management teams to ensure quality and consistent messaging

o  Seek exposure with regional churches, schools, conferences, presbyteries, etc. to promote BSM’s mission of radical hospitality and to market for faith-based education and arts events


-       Management Responsibilities:

o  Write and submit program reports for recordkeeping, senior management, BSM Board of Directors, external stakeholders

o  Create and oversee the Community Engagement budget with guidance from Senior Director of Development & Marketing, Head Pastor, and CFO

o  Act as point person for Community Engagement events which are geared towards public education, social justice, and advocacy

o  Restructure Youth Initiative Advisory Board into a Community Engagement Advisory Board, comprised of experts in the areas of ministry, the arts, advocacy, education, and policy

o  Document and track incident reports, legal issues, and insurance

Other Duties:

-       Help lead Sunday afternoon worship once a month and preach 2-to-4 times a year

-       Be a present member of the BSM wide staff team to collaborate, to ensure space sharing, and to maintain the calendar

-       Participate in professional development and in-service training, as appropriate

-       Adhere to organizational policies and procedures

-       Perform other duties assigned related to the essential functions of the position

Desired Skills & Qualifications:

-       Ability to plan and execute consistent, high-quality programming year-round, with programs occurring simultaneously

-       Demonstrated experience in designing and facilitating education programs surrounding faith-based and secular justice issues

-       Self-starter, strategic, collaborator, excellent communication

-       Graduate degree preferred, or commensurate experience

-       Ability and willingness to work early mornings, evenings, and weekends, as needed

-       Supervisory experience (Coordinator year-round, summer YI team)

-       Entrepreneurial and relational
