The School

The USAP Community School is a new A-level, boarding school in Zimbabwe, that educates top low-income students from across the country, with the goal of preparing them for admission to the world’s top universities, and instilling in them the character to use their education to benefit Zimbabwe. The school is founded out of the USAP Program from Zimbabwean non-profit organization Education Matters, known across the world as one of the most successful pathways for high-achieving, low-income African students to access top universities. Alums of USAP have gone on to Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT, Brown, and have been selected as Rhodes and Gates-Cambridge Scholars, and offered admission into top PhD, MBA and medical schools, among many other accomplishments.

The USAP Community School is guided by the belief that excellent students deserve access to a great education, regardless of their economic circumstances, and that the best way of improving a community is by educating its people. The school follows the Quaker ideals of living a life of purpose, hard work and reflection, in service to others and one’s community. The boarding experience will support a rigorous Cambridge International Education (CIE) math and science curriculum, with a humanities core that unites the school and helps students understand themselves and grow as people.

At USAPCS, you would join a team of dedicated teachers led by the school’s three co-founders: Rebecca Zeigler Mano, founder of the original USAP program and its director since founding; Collence Nyazenga, a physics teacher, Education Matters USAP counselor and alum of the USAP program; and James Linville, head of the acclaimed Abaarso School in Somaliland and 2019 Global Teacher Prize finalist.

The Position

USAP Community School faculty and staff will be responsible for creating an environment in which students can learn unabashedly, be challenged, develop their whole self, grow as people and as intellectuals, and be prepared to use their education in the future as a means of improving their families, community, and Zimbabwe as a whole.

Working at our school requires an intense commitment - to improving the lives of talented students who might not otherwise have opportunities to access a quality education, and to building a world-class school from the ground up. Such a task requires full immersion and dedication, and is not for everyone. Those who are ready, however, will experience the immense satisfaction of building a meaningful and lasting school, an achievement that they can be proud of for the rest of their lives.

Because each student at USAPCS takes three A-level science classes and chooses one of them between biology and physics, biology forms a core part of the curriculum. The class follows the Cambridge A-level syllabus, including practicals, and emphasizes both knowledge of the information and application for practical use.

Responsibilities

Like other faculty members, the biology teacher will participate in the holistic educational experience that the school offers. This includes teaching Cambridge A-level biology classes to Lower 6 and Upper 6, as well as supervising a club, sport or extracurricular activity, advising a group of students, and involving themselves in the general life of the school outside of the classroom, being a mentor figure to students and a reliable and enthusiastic colleague to faculty peers. Specific responsibilities are listed below.

  • Teach two sections (L6 and U6) of Cambridge A-levels biology. One class will have approximately 22 students and the other will have 10-15 students.
  • Associated lesson planning, attendance tracking, curriculum development and documentation, developing materials, setting exams and grading for these two classes.
  • Prepare for and attend practicals, which could happen on Saturdays and require travel to Harare (which the school would provide).
  • Hold at least 3 hours of office hours per week for students to receive extra help, and be informally available at other times to assist students.
  • Manage a Junior Faculty member who will attend your class and help with grading, meeting with students for extra help, and other associated class duties.
  • Supervise one club, sport or extracurricular activity.
  • Advise a group of 5-8 students, meeting with each one briefly at least once per week.
  • Help out with duties sharing among teachers, including supervising prep once per week, weekend duty once per month, kitchen duty on a rotating schedule with advisees, and more.
  • Participate in any faculty meetings, committees, professional development sessions, etc.

Experience and Qualifications

We expect of staff and faculty the same values and qualities that we expect of students. Commitment to the school’s mission, full participation in its community, willingness to work long hours, adaptability and creativity are all values that staff members will need to be successful at USAPCS. Specific experiences and qualifications are below:

  • BA degree in biology or a related field (neuroscience, pre-medicine, biochemistry, etc). Advanced degree is a plus, but not required.
  • Experience teaching the Cambridge A-level syllabus is desirable
  • Commitment to the school mission of providing opportunities to disadvantaged students; results-driven mindset and willingness to do whatever it takes to drive student success inside and outside of the classroom
  • Strong written and spoken English, proactive communication
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to do self-directed work with limited supervision and maintain focus on the ‘big picture’ and organizational goals without losing sight of the details
  • Some experience teaching, mentoring, coaching, or working with youth
