Director of Operations Position Description

Under the direction of the Head of School, the Director of Operations provides leadership for and manages all operational functions, including all human resources, finance, IT, and facilities issues. Further, the Director of Operations is the key link between the School and various regulatory agencies (e.g., the DC Public Charter School Board and the Office of the State Superintendent of the State Superintendent of Education), and is responsible for ensuring that the School complies with all relevant rules and regulations. The Director of Operations is a key member of the School’s leadership team, and will play an important role in ensuring the school’s short- and long-term success.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Strategy & Planning

  1. Leader in the development, implementation, and monitoring the organization’s short- and long-term strategy.
  2. Makes recommendations regarding the implementation of the organizations short- and long-term expansion goals.
  3. Holds key strategic and institutional relationships, including community and labor leaders, anchor institution executives, elected and government agency officials, academics and foundation officers.
  4. Collaborates with a broad range of multisector stakeholders (i.e. community, anchor institutions, business, finance, academic, and government) to inform the direction of the strategy.

Talent Strategy/Human Resources

  1. Develop, implement and oversee talent strategies of all academic and non-academic staff.
  2. Acts as primary contact with employee benefits providers.
  3. Makes recommendations regarding employee benefits programs to the Head of School.
  4. Supervises and evaluates School Receptionist(s); Operations Associate; Food Service Coordinator; Extended Day Coordinator and maintenance, technology, and security staff.


  1. Develops and maintains purchasing procedures in accordance with the school’s requirements.
  2. Oversees the purchasing and leasing of materials, services, supplies, and equipment.
  3. Prepares requests for proposals, issues and receives bid requests and interviews vendors regarding the purchase of materials, services, supplies, and equipment in accordance with the school’s charter and the regulations of the PCSB.

Data and Information

  1. Recommends to the Head of School the purchase of information systems software to ensure the effective and efficient maintenance of school data and records.
  2. Maintains inventory of school property.
  3. Prepares reports to the PCSB, OSSE, funders, and other agencies as directed.

Correspondence, Communication, and Technology

  1. Supervises the preparation and dissemination of school correspondence.
  2. Ensures the messages are school’s voicemail, website, and other social media are current and appropriate.
  3. Recommends to the Head of School the purchase and/or lease of all office and instructional equipment and supervises the maintenance of all office and instructional equipment.
  4. Ensures the appropriate backup and storage of computer files.
  5. Supervises and performs, when necessary office reception functions.


  1. Plans for short- and long-range facilities changes.
  2. Negotiates contract and supervises the work of cleaning, maintenance, and security contractors and staff.
  3. Ensures that the interior and exterior of the school facility are maintained in a manner that is safe and aesthetically pleasing.

Food Service

  1. Supervises all food service functions
  2. Negotiates contract for food service vendor.
  3. Ensures that student breakfast, lunch, and snacks are consistent with the USDA regulations.
  4. Ensures that all food service activities meet basic DC Health Department regulations.

Other Duties

  1. Plans, directs, and supervises all main office clerical and reception activities.
  2. Assists with meeting and event planning, scheduling, and preparation.
  3. Directs other projects and tasks assigned by the Head of School.

Required Skills and Experience

A successful candidate:

  • Possesses, at a minimum, a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business/finance, non-profit management, or a related field (MBA preferred). 
  • Has a minimum of five years of top-level administrative experience, preferably in a school, nonprofit, or public agency setting.
  • Experience leading strategy development - this role requires a structural and systems methodology to developing strategy as well as a long-term view and highly creative approach.
  • Is proficient in basic office computer skills, including, but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Docs.
  • Demonstrates the capacity for independent work, flexibility, and the capacity to handle multiple demands.
  • Has a firm commitment to upholding the school’s mission.
