The Position 

The Education Trust—West (ETW) seeks a full-time People & Operations Manager to build and manage the systems and processes that will allow team members to work collaboratively, grow together and maximize their impact. The People & Operations will manage end-to-end operational processes and implement systems that increase the effectiveness and efficiency of our work. This person will also execute initiatives around the life cycle of an employee including hiring, onboarding and retention efforts with a focus on equity and inclusion. This position reports to the Director of Planning, Grants & Administration. 

The ideal candidate is highly organized, systems-oriented, able to plan and track multiple projects and is passionate about creating learning experiences and growth opportunities for staff members and the team as a whole in order to support the organization’s work to improve the educational experiences and outcomes for low-income students and students of color. 

 This position will be based in Oakland, California. (We are currently working remotely due to COVID-19.) 

 Major Responsibilities 

 People & Culture (60%) 

  • Serve as thought partner in setting a vision for and leading the execution of initiatives around the life cycle of an employee: sourcing, selecting and onboarding new staff, development and retention of existing staff, and onboarding and transitions
  • Liaise with Ed Trust Human Resources team members in Washington DC on systems and policies including annual reviews, benefits, and organization-wide retreats 
  • Support ETW’s Walking the Talk committee and proactively plan for programming associated with continuous learning opportunities and facilitated conversations around confronting the dynamics of power and privilege related to race, class, gender identity, sexual orientation 
  • Build and maintain staff culture and ensure operating values come to life in collaboration with the ETW’s culture committee, The Funky Bunch. 
  • Lead planning and development of content for weekly staff meetings and support planning and execution of team and all-staff retreats 
  • Lead ETW’s Russlynn Ali Fellowship through selection, support and development of interns and ongoing engagement with alumni of the fellowship
  • Manage 1-2 staff within the Planning, Grants & Admin team 


General Operations and Project Management (40%) 

  • Support with finance processes including compliance, strategic coding of expenses against funding, annual budgeting process and closing/launching of fiscal year finances 
  • Manage the timely creation, approval and monitoring of all ETW contracts including consultants, MOUs, and revenue agreements
  • Develop, maintain, and implement efficient and standardized office procedures and critical infrastructure, such as organization-wide manuals, emergency plans and trackers in Asana 
  • Manage systems and processes related to legal compliance, including but not limited to lobbying reporting 
  • Manage all technology systems and ensure that they meet the needs of staff and the organization
  • Support special projects including with the 20th anniversary campaign, office moves, and organization-wide initiatives as part of the Grants, Planning and Administration Team
  • Other duties as assigned



 Qualifications and Experience 

Required 

  • Strategic talent acumen coupled with a deep and lived belief in the importance diversity, equity and inclusion 
  • Proven work experience as a recruiter or similar role and familiarity with Applicant Tracking Systems, resume databases and sourcing techniques 
  • The ability to build strong relationships and to collaborate with a diverse and dynamic staff team 
  • Refined prioritization and project/time management skills with an eye for attention to detail – able to switch gears, handle interruptions, and refocus back on planned work while meeting all deadlines 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to communicate complex information clearly and effectively 
  • Strong computer skills; proficient in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook);  
  • Commitment to “Walking the Talk: operating with – and a willingness to develop – cultural competence: an understanding that systemic and institutionalized racism significantly affect communities of color and of the historical impact of privilege and power on American systems
  • Good judgment to manage sensitive and confidential matters. 
  • Demonstrated ability to set up processes and systems, ensure adherence and follow-up, and continuous improvement. 
  • A passionate commitment to expanding opportunities for low-income students and students of color, and a belief that P-16 education in California must do a much better job in serving these students. 
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred and at least 3-5 years of human resources or related experience required 


Compensation 

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. The Education Trust–West offers a comprehensive benefits package.
