Purpose of Position:

The role of the Step Up Louisiana Baton Rouge Chapter Organizer will be to support and organize with Step Up Louisiana’s Baton Rouge Chapter including the Baton Rouge Economic Justice Committee and the Baton Rouge Parent Union.

The members of Step Up Louisiana are committed to building political power to win education and economic justice for all. Our members step up and go beyond voting to campaign, organize from a racial justice perspective and hold political and community leaders accountable. We work in our own neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces to disrupt systemic oppression. We build the people-power needed to win in our city and state.

Step Up Louisiana is fiscally sponsored by F & L Organizational Support Services (FLOSS), a local non-profit organization that helps small to mid-sized businesses and nonprofits develop infrastructure to increase organizational efficiency & effectiveness.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.    Administering creative, relevant, broad and intensive outreach efforts to low-wage workers, parents, clergy, and community activists

2.    Building one-on-one relationships.

3.    Identifying and developing leaders to guide and lead campaigns, and working with our members to develop strategies for how to win our campaigns

4.    Supporting and organizing the monthly chapter meetings for Step Up Louisiana’s Baton Rouge Chapter

5.    Recruiting active dues-paying members who align with our values and who are active in our campaigns.

6.    Training member-leaders

7.    Participating in GOTV and civic engagement efforts

8.    Developing member-leadership through a defined leadership ladder program

9.    Educating the membership about our core issues

10.  Supporting other activity of the organization

11.  Facilitating individual/group meetings to discuss and plan organizing campaigns.

12.  Motivating individuals and groups of community leaders to take action.

13.  Working to involve community allies in organizing campaigns.

14.  Grassroots fundraising and base building for Step Up Louisiana

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

●     At least 2 years of organizing experience in labor, community, faith, student, or political organizations or campaigns

●     Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (listening, speaking, and writing)

●     Commitment to the social justice movement and passion for winning change with low-income people

●     Ability to organize community members to take action on multiple issues for local neighborhood campaigns as well as city and statewide campaigns

●     Experience working independently and managing a volunteer team

●     Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment, be detail-oriented and solution-oriented

●     Possession of excellent listening skills and the ability to comprehend the concerns of others.

●     Experience in making and following through on a work plan.

●     The ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.

●     Willingness to conduct house visits, school visits, and work site visits.

●     Willingness to travel for trainings and meetings

●     Ability to work long and irregular hours, including some nights, weekends, and holidays.

●     Possession of basic map navigation skills a plus.

●     Own a car with insurance and comfortable driving in that car with members

●     Ability to use a computer for word processing and be comfortable with the internet and social media posting.


Physical Requirements:

The position is based in Baton Rouge. Work is generally performed from a field office setting or other location like a home office during the COVID-19 pandemic to complete the required assignments of the position. Long and extended hours and a minimal amount of overnight travel may be required. GOTV season may require some physical activity for canvassing door to door possibly multiple hours a day 6 days out of the week.
