Upward Roots is seeking a thoughtful and passionate leader for the position of Deputy Director. This is a new role within the organization and, as a grassroots nonprofit, this is a unique opportunity to impact our organizational and programmatic growth.

 About the Opportunity

This position is a collaborative one, working with the Executive Director in all aspects of programmatic and business operations. We are a small team with a big vision. We share responsibilities from the mundane to the inspiring. Our successes, challenges, and failures are mutual. We strive to continuously improve and you will have the opportunity to make an immediate and lasting impact.

The Deputy Director will work hand in hand with the Executive Director to achieve UR’s annual strategic financial, operational, and program goals. Mutual responsibilities will include operations, communications, fundraising, and programs. Some key responsibilities in this position are elaborated below.

 Financial Management

The Deputy will work with the Executive Director to develop UR’s annual operating and program budgets, as well as build out the income pipeline to achieve budget targets. The Deputy may also support the general financial management of the organization.

 Grants Management

The Deputy Director will oversee UR’s grant fundraising initiatives, which will include grant applications and reports, as well as general compliance with grant agreements. Additionally, the Deputy will nurture and expand the organization’s grant funding pipeline.

 Program Development and Implementation

The Deputy Director will supervise the Program Coordinator, who is responsible for all of the day-to-day program operations. The deputy will serve as a program visionary, guiding the Program Coordinator in program improvements to achieve deeper impact for youth participants and school partners. The Deputy will also lead the design, development, and implementation of all program-related UR events, with the Program Coordinator’s support.

 Communications

The Deputy will develop and implement communications strategies to support the organization’s programmatic growth, elevate UR’s brand in Oakland, introduce UR to new audiences, and nurture UR’s relationships with current supporters through newsletters, social media posts, or other modes.

 Additional Responsibilities

We are a small team and many responsibilities are shared. The Deputy should be ready to take on any additional responsibilities that may arise and support the Executive Director in a multitude of tasks.

This may be the position for you if you are:
