Public Citizen’s Digital Rights program challenges the political power of Big Tech. We fight for digital rights and social justice in the U.S. and abroad. We promote digital and social rights, equity and justice in a digital era through public campaigning, technical assistance and policy analysis.  

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Organizer will help digital rights and consumer advocates around the world promote global digital justice and comprehensive protections, regulations, legislation and corporate practice, as well as challenge harmful new digital trade rules that could compromise regulations in digital economy. The Organizer will help build coalitions and a campaign to educate and empower consumer and digital rights activists.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Organizer’s responsibilities may include:

  • Organizing civil society coalitions, including planning meetings and communications, speaking frequently with our partners and cultivating new organizational relationships,
  • Producing written educational and campaign materials in cooperation and coordination with the coalition members and the program director,
  • Creating content across the traditional and social media spectrum including e-action alerts, blog entries, and website text,
  • Developing grassroots support through digital outreach and other strategies,
  • Proposing ideas for effective digital rights advocacy,
  • Conducting research for advocacy purposes, including mapping key actors and issue progress at decision making forums,
  • Assisting fundraising, drafting of grant reports and grant proposals,
  • Speaking with media and at public events on behalf of Public Citizen,
  • Traveling to support alliance partners, grassroots and coalition development,
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Work Experience: Three or more years of advocacy or other campaigning experience preferred.

kills: Strong writing, communications and civic/grassroots organizing skills required.  

Knowledge: Knowledge of digital rights policy debates preferred, including for example regarding privacy, data protection, intellectual property or trade agreements.

Capabilities: Ability to work alone and in collaboration; attention to detail and technical accuracy; be creative and pro-active in identifying messaging opportunities; ability to envision project development and complete work on deadline; discretion and good judgment; commitment to standing up to corporate power; flexibility and ability to respond quickly to new developments. 

Conditions: Available to travel.
