JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Summary/Objective


 High School of Excellence and Innovation is a small, academically rigorous, full-time New York City Department of Education school designed to re-engage high school students who are over-age and under-credited school. East Side House, Inc. is directly responsible for the administration of the program’s supports/effort which enhances the improvement of attendance / student engagement / and school culture via an holistic approach, of providing advisors, social emotional services, mental health services, family engagement event, and much more. We support the academic component by offering additional academic support, career and education exploration, work preparation, skills development, and internships.

 

Under the supervision of the Community School Coordinator with latitude for independent judgment, the Internship Coordinator will be responsible to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and ability required, but not limited to:

 

Essential Functions

Duties include, but are not limited to the flowing key activities:

  • Solicit, develop and cultivate internship and/or job opportunities within the community including use of cold calls and visits to employers.
  • Establish liaisons with corporate and nonprofit organizations for identification of employment and internship opportunities, and to provide workshops and mentoring opportunities for students including coordination with other community youth employment assistance programs.
  • Provide direct support for the Director in areas of staff management and development
  • Maintain ongoing contact with employers to learn of new internship and/or employment needs as well as problems arising from existing placements.
  • Maintain records and files of Student Records/Data secured and locked at all times.
  • Assist students in developing and achieving life/career goals that are assessed throughout training and during career exploration.
  • Conduct Site Visits for follow up to various employment sites on a consistent basis
  • Assist students in job search, including resume and cover letter development, search strategies and interviewing skills.
  • Maintain database tracking and reporting of each student’s progress and measurable outcomes in Capricorn including timely entry of case notes of weekly meetings and incidents, and employment.
  • Prepare and present curriculum to students on job readiness and related topics; facilitate interactive Seminars.
  • Provide case management services for the students in the program.
  • Attend meetings with staff to review students’ progress and discuss appropriate trainings and intervention plans. Actively participate in initiatives, affiliations, coalitions, etc. that pertain to East Side House’s mission.
  • Participate in assigned staff development trainings.
  • Actively participate in team and program meetings. Provide suggestions for program improvement and implementation.
  • Develop and maintain a student Youth Council, which will empower and encourage students to be leaders.
  • Plan and conduct family or parent meetings. 
  • Assist Director in overseeing the creation of innovative and contextualized student learning experiences.

·        Facilitate after-school activities as per program need.

  • Provide other program support functions as required.

Education/ Experience and Skills Required:

· Bachelor's degree in education, human services, or related field.

· Preferred experience in vocational counseling

· Minimum of two years’ experience with youth at risk and/or school setting

· Excellent verbal, analytical, writing, communication, organizational skills.

· Ability to work in a team oriented environment and multi-task.

· Strong interpersonal skills and time management skills.

· Demonstrated knowledge of community service/ development.

· Knowledge and experience in Microsoft Word and other applications

Position Type and Expected Hours of work:

This is a full-time job. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.to 6 p.m. Some evening and Weekends required. Maintain flexible hours and work days for field trips and events. Work days/hours subject to change based on ESH needs.

 

Supervisory Responsibility

The role has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

Work Environment

Business casual. This job operates in a school environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines

 

Travel

Minimal travel is expected for this position.


Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
