Leadership for Educational Equity (LEE) is a nonprofit leadership development organization inspiring and supporting a network of civic leaders to eradicate the injustice of educational inequity.

Through one-on-one coaching, fellowships, workshops, and resources, LEE works to develop and inspire its members individually and collectively, across all disciplines – as policy makers, advocates, elected leaders and community organizers. LEE membership is free and currently open to alumni of several partner organizations including Teach For America, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), New Leaders, Latinos for Education, Urban Teachers, and Public Allies. Position Summary

LEE seeks an entrepreneurial and innovative Vice President, Policy & Advocacy (VP, PA) responsible for guiding LEE’s effort to grow the leadership and effectiveness of members who are growing their policy knowledge and becoming better advocates for the underserved children throughout the nation. As a member of the LEE Leadership Team, reporting to the Senior Vice President for National Impact, the VP, PA will be accountable for the overall strategy, performance, and operations of LEE’s Policy & Advocacy (PA) Team. This person will be responsible for the management of a team dedicated to helping LEE members discern their path towards a policy/advocacy career, develop their skills through high-quality programs, and progress in their leadership journey. Additionally, the PA team supports senior members across all leadership pathways to maximize their impact and effectiveness as equity-minded leaders. As a high visibility leader at LEE, the VP, PA will have a deep personal and professional alignment with LEE’s core values.

Responsibilities:

Team Management and Financial Stewardship (50%)

  • Manage a diverse team of 19 to meet and exceed goals
  • Manage budget for the Policy & Advocacy team and ensure fiscal responsibility
  • Evaluate staff member performance and develop differentiated professional development plans as well as lead the team’s hiring, culture building, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and team building efforts
  • Work with National Impact senior leaders and across LEE teams to ensure staff in regions are developing the policy skills, knowledge, and mindsets of LEE members, and working towards increased member impact for kids
  • As a member of the organization-wide Leadership Team and member of the National Impact Leadership Team, collaborate with other Vice Presidents across the organization to develop various, meaningful ways to increase member engagement, recruitment results, and provide optimal support to members interested in policy leadership
  • Collaborate with teams across the organization to leverage programs and assets to reinforce support for members
  • Provide financial leadership around the Policy & Advocacy fellowship programs

Policy & Advocacy Vision and Strategy (40%)

  • Set goals and lead the team to execute effectively and efficiently to goals including managing through the talent continuum
  • Create and execute the Policy & Advocacy strategy to ensure members are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to be effective policy professionals and impact the lives of children
  • Oversee the creation of online, in-person, and blended learning opportunities
  • Set the vision for the fellowship programs and develop relationships across the country with partnering organizations
  • Build out the credential of policy programs for members

Special Projects (10%)

  • As assigned by the Senior Vice President, National Impact

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or commensurate years of experience
  • 10+ years of highly relevant professional experience in policy or advocacy (as a policy leader or in program development)
  • 5 years management experience (managing program, a multi-layered team, and budget)
  • Extensive experience building, managing and growing a large, highly effective team
  • Excellent managerial, interpersonal and networking skills, as well as ability to establish and maintain professional relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct landscape analysis and strategy
  • Proven ability to operate and thrive in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment
  • Ability to work flexible hours with occasional weekends and evenings
  • Strong, demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity & inclusion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (e.g. MPP)
  • 10 years of managing large teams through layers to exceed goals
  • Experience leading and managing a geographically dispersed and/or start-up team
  • Deep passion for educational equity and belief in LEE’s mission and theory of change
