Established in 1989, the Asian American Federation (AAF) is a pan-Asian nonprofit leadership organization that represents and supports a network of nearly 70 Asian American community service organizations in New York City, which work in the fields of health & human services, education, economic development, civic participation, and social justice. AAF’s mission is to raise the influence and well-being of the pan-Asian American community through research, policy advocacy, public awareness, and organizational development. 

Overview: 

This part-time contract position will run from February to June 2020 and require approximately 21 hours of work per week. 

AAF is seeking exceptionally qualified candidates for multiple Census Organizer roles. The Census Organizers will: inform community members about the significance of the census and the importance of census self-response; identify and address barriers to census participation; ask and encourage New Yorkers to self-respond to the 2020 Census; and connect them to the tools and resources they need to self-respond. AAF’s work under this grant will be focused on the rapidly growing Asian communities of Staten Island. 

Responsibilities:  

Working under the leadership of Asian American Federation’s Census CCF Program Manager, the Census Organizers will: 

  • Build strong relationships with historically undercounted New Yorkers in order to encourage census self-response 
  • Engage New Yorkers about the census through a variety of activities, including canvassing, tabling, phone-banking, text-banking, town halls, teach-ins, and other types of events 
  • Participate as a collaborative member of AAF’s in-house Census team in strategizing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating the outreach and community engagement effort 
  • Track census engagement activities using both qualitative and quantitative methods 
  • Adhere to all data security and privacy protocols around census engagement 
  • Participate in trainings and professional development opportunities related to the census 
  • Support volunteer recruitment and training activities 

Qualifications: 

  • Experience in community engagement, campaign work, or other forms of direct outreach 
  • Excellent communication, project management, and multi-tasking skills 
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills 
  • Demonstrated cultural competence with respect to Asian communities in Staten Island 
  • Understanding of New York City’s diversity and experience working with people of diverse backgrounds 
  • Proficiency in use of technology, such as laptops and tablets 
  • Flexible time schedule, with willingness to work occasional weekend and evening hours
