Life Span is a nationally known leader in the provision of services to victims of violence and their children. Our comprehensive services include legal representation, counseling, and advocacy. Our work encompasses such issues as police domestic violence, immigration, employment issues, sexual assault protective orders, mental health, teen dating violence, and battered women as defendants. Our agency has two sites, one in Des Plaines and one in Chicago. Our services are available in English, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Telugu, and Polish and are free of charge. Our agency provides national leadership in policy work and legislation, and our staff has trained lawyers and other professionals in Illinois and across the country.

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:   

Provides individual and group services to victims of domestic violence and their children at the Des Plaines office of Life Span. Under the supervision of the Director of Counseling, delivers training to volunteers, participates in community outreach and education, and cooperates with other social service providers in community collaborations.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Master’s Degree in social work, psychology, counseling or related field.  
  • Bilingual in Polish or Spanish required.
  • Car required.

JOB DUTIES:                                                     

1.        Provide counseling both on an individual and group basis as assigned by the Director of Counseling.

2.        Assist in screening and assessment of program participants.

3.        Assist in outreach activities.

4.        Maintain statistical service records and case file documentation on assigned cases.

5.        Serve as an advocate by helping women make contact with other social service agencies, legal and financial assistance and the police.

6.        Answer the crisis line as assigned or needed; includes periodic after hours coverage.

7.        Serve as a resource person for crisis line volunteers as needed.

8.        Assist in conducting crisis line staff meetings and training sessions as assigned.

9.        Attend professional training and meetings as assigned or approved.

10.      Attend and participate in staff meetings.

11.      Refer appropriate clients for legal advocacy services to legal advocacy staff.

12.      Assist in community or professional education through speaking engagements as assigned by the Director of Counseling.
