Scope

Neighborhood House (NH) operates multiple education and employment programs that serve several hundred individuals and families annually. These programs provide multilingual, multicultural case management and comprehensive employment search, placement, training, retention and career advancement support for job seekers throughout King County. This position works with job seekers of all backgrounds to provide wraparound case management services to remove barriers and link clients to employment providers that will assist them in securing meaningful employment, job training and career advancement opportunities.

 

This position is part of the Resources to Initiate Successful Employment (RISE) project, which is a three-year pilot program funded by the Federal Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) designed to test new employment and training interventions that lead to successful employment. The RISE program will be administered locally through the Department of Social and Human Services (DSHS) and will target specific population groups

who are receiving federal food stamps. Those target populations include those who are: homeless, veterans, limited English proficient, long term unemployed, or non-custodial parents. The Life Skills Instructor will teach classes at 2 NH locations Wiley Center (White Center) and Birch Creek (Kent).

 

The successful candidate will possess strong classroom presentation and facilitation skills to help job seekers develop life and job readiness skills. This position requires flexibility and a demonstrated ability to coach clients through stressful situations and resolve barriers to learning and employment. This position will also plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize student learning and modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student’s needs with unique barriers and challenges that low-income, immigrant and/or refugee communities face.

Reports To: Employment & Adult Education Manager

Status: Regular, 40 hours per week or Regular, 20 hours per week, 12 months per year

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Hiring Range: 16 ($19.24 to $21.35 per hour)

Location: Birch Creek and Greenbridge

Closing Date: April 16th, 2018 or when filled


Responsibilities

 

  • Provide classroom-based instruction to adults with a wide range of life skills and job readiness needs.
  • Maintain a curriculum and modify to meet the needs of adults with life barriers.
  • Develop lesson plans and progressive learning objectives that meet the needs of students, program, and funder goals.
  • Obtain and utilize appropriate assessment and testing tools to determine student skills and needs to target instruction.
  • Provide learning lab-oriented and individualized, one-on-one instruction as necessary.
  • Coordinate with Neighborhood House case management staff on a regular basis.
  • Conduct and facilitate community outreach as needed for recruitment.
  • Maintain timely and accurate client and outcome records, and assist with reporting requirements as necessary.
  • Recruit and/or supervise classroom-based volunteers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in adult education or related field and two years of experience teaching, preferably in a community-based setting; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Highly positive and enthusiastic style capable of motivating others.
  • Ability to work as a team member in a multicultural organization and community.
  • Knowledge of key computer applications (Microsoft Office and Windows).
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment with co-workers, clients and partners.
  • Willingness to comply with the established agency performance standards which may include: productivity/personal responsibility, client/customer service-orientation, embracing a team player orientation, entrepreneurialism, and maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends.
  • Must have access to independent, reliable transportation for travel in King County.
  • First Aid Certification (within 30 days of hire).
  • CPR Certification (within 30 days of hire).
  • Child Abuse and Neglect training (within 2 weeks of hire).
  • Must pass Neighborhood House background check requirements.
  • Postion requires Washington State bi-annual criminal background re-check.
