The Executive Director ensures that the Sag Harbor Cinema becomes not just sustainable, but an invaluable community resource to the Sag Harbor community specifically and the eastern Long Island community generally, with the eventual goal being recognition among the leading independent cinema institutions nationally and internationally. While separate-from and in-support-of the vision of the Artistic Director who curates films and programs for SHC, the Executive Director guides the strategic direction and overall business activities of the organization.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with SHC’s Board of Directors to create and implement the long-range vision for the organization and develop goals and timelines to realize that vision;
  • In collaboration with and supporting the Artistic Director, ensure that SHC’s programs are of the highest artistic caliber, while remaining relevant to a wide range of audiences and participants, balancing artistic integrity with fiscal responsibility and commercial viability;
  • Create or identify, then execute ongoing fundraising campaigns and one-off events/opportunities to ensure the long-term sustainability of SHC; Continue to develop existing membership program;
  • Ensure that the facilities maximize their income-generating potential with ticket income and occasional space rentals, while balancing the needs of the institution for educational and community outreach programs;
  • Develop and manage SHC’s operating budget, capital budget, and financial reporting systems;
  • Oversee all staff, operations, and programs of SHC, both in the cinema and in the community at-large;
  • Create a culture of transparency and communication throughout staff, board, and committees;
  • Establish oneself as SHC’s representative among local government, community, business, and educational groups, as well as other stakeholders including the Sag Harbor Partnership;
  • Represent SHC locally, nationally, and internationally with the goal of establishing SHC as a leading independent cinema and regionally-important cultural and community resource; Represent SHC in the press/media and in correspondence with our constituency;
  • Forge partnerships with similar institutions nationally and internationally and with other cultural and educational institutions regionally;


KEY SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • A minimum of five years — ideally ten years — of experience leading an institution or company with diverse stakeholders and an established reputation for success;
  • Experience working in an organization that owns or operates a facility with patrons, visitors, and multiple stakeholders;
  • Proven track record of understanding and managing a complex non-profit organization with fundraising, event hosting, facility management, and educational programs;
  • An innovative and entrepreneurial spirit; Specifically, an experience founding, managing, and growing non-profit start-ups is highly desirable;
  • Background of successful fundraising with sponsors, foundations, and individuals in the amount of $10,000 or more — this could be either as a non-profit executive, a board member, or someone with the proven ability to raise funding for projects and activities;
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills; Decisive, confident, and humane — with a high degree of emotional intelligence to help channel creative energies, support artistic initiatives, respond to local concerns, and interact with an influential and committed founding board;
  • Ability to cultivate effective relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders (donors, corporate sponsors, governments, audiences, national and international film community, media);
  • Inclination to think globally and act locally; Able to interface with star-power summer residents while simultaneously engaging the local year-round community;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with outstanding social skills;
  • An impeccable reputation for integrity and strong, creative leadership;
  • Strong organizational skills with proven ability to focus, prioritize, and execute;
  • A knowledge of the film presentation business and industry is highly desirable;
  •  An appreciation for film, the arts, and culture – both locally and internationally. Multi-disciplinary experience and credibility in the film and cultural world is a plus.
