Messaging and Engagement Strategist

Any CIPC office

The California Immigrant Policy Center (CIPC) is a non-partisan, non-profit statewide organization founded in 1996, as California reeled from the ugly aftermath of Proposition 187 and harsh federal copycats. A multi-ethnic hub for statewide advocacy, CIPC has worked hand-in-hand with community partners across the state for two decades to create and defend a national blueprint for pro-immigrant policy. Our notable achievements include The California Values Act, the Drivers License Bill, Health for All Kids and One California, the largest investment in legal services protection in the country.

POSITION SUMMARY

California Immigrant Policy Center (CIPC) seeks a Messaging and Engagement Strategist or Senior Messaging and Engagement Strategist (title commensurate with experience) to help immigrant rights leaders put rigorous messaging research into practice for big impacts over the long run. The Strategist is a new position at CIPC that will lead efforts to activate data-driven lessons for incorporation in campaign communications, organizational messaging, and collaboration with state and national partners. The incumbent will be a relational leader who enjoys uplifting and helping unleash the power of immigrant and allied storytellers, and takes pride in being a generous, compassionate collaborator in social change work.

The (Senior) Messaging and Engagement Strategist reports directly to the Messaging Research Project Manager and is an active collaborator in the Communications Department, while working with other CIPC teams and external partners. This position can be based in any CIPC office throughout the state (Los Angeles, Oakland, or Sacramento). Remote employment will be considered for the right applicant.

This position is temporarily remote due to Covid-19.

CIPC is an equal opportunity employer; people of color and individuals from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. CIPC does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, ethnic background, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, or disability.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent will:

  • In partnership with Messaging Research Project Manager, lead application of messaging research lessons to active campaigns and issue-based communication.
  • Plan and coordinate activities to put CIPC and partner’s opinion research into practice, including but not limited to meetings, convenings, briefings, conference presentations, partner trainings, and the development of communications and report ephemera.
  • Provide technical assistance with narrative framing, audience targeting, and messaging best practices to CIPC staff and regional/national partners working on a range of immigration issues.
  • Work with colleagues to identify trends, best practices, and cutting-edge strategies to help immigrant rights communicators become more effective in reaching, activating, and moving target audiences.
  • In partnership with Organizing and Communications Teams, identify, equip, and support differently-impacted storytellers in sharing personal narratives as part of broader communications efforts, with guidance from research findings.
  • Support development of creative content based on research findings, as organizational budget allows.
  • Lead regular strategy calls and convenings to identify gaps and field needs with partners.
  • Establish and maintain internal tracking processes to support active monitoring of public and private polling and other immigration-related attitudinal data.
  • Support Communications Team in meeting obligations to funders, including but not limited to establishing and tracking the kinds of information to assess and report on outcomes and impacts;
  • Provide writing and analysis support to grant proposals, research proposals, memo briefs, e-blasts, social media, presentations, and talking points for CIPC staff, partners, allies, and other external-facing audiences.
  • Manage relationships, representing CIPC and its goals and values, with research and advocacy partners, legislators, funders, and constituents.
  • Participate with other CIPC staff on the development and use of effective organizational systems (e.g. calendar management, Dropbox maintenance, MOCHA practice) and meeting processes (e.g. agendizing and clarifying purpose and desire outcomes pre-meeting, documenting with meeting notes, inclusive facilitation, etc.)
  • Perform other program-related and all-staff activities, as assigned.
  • Demonstrate willingness and ability to travel occasionally to attend meetings, conferences, and other work-related events.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ideal candidates will:

•        Have a bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of related professional experience. More than 5 years related professional experience desirable.
