The Assistant Director, Curriculum & Instruction is responsible for overseeing core academic programming and instruction; researching and implementing pedagogical strategies and systems for delivery and evaluation of curricula; designing an instructor recruitment strategy; and writing and revising ELA curricula as needed. A supervisor to two Managers of Curriculum & Instruction, the Assistant Director, Curriculum & Instruction is a key member of a six-person Curriculum & Instruction department.



Oversight of Core Academic Programming

  • Supervise and support two Managers of Curriculum & Instruction to ensure smooth implementation of the core academic program from the spring of 9th grade through the fall of 11th grade. Each Manager oversees one grade of Saturday / Summer Academy and one grade of Weekday Afterschool programming
  • Design differentiated professional development sessions to support instructors
  • Evaluate academic performance data and suggest modifications to curricula and instructional approach to improve academic outcomes for students
  • In collaboration with grade-level teams, support the integration of research-based coaching and advisory models for increasing student academic achievement
  • Assist with hiring and onboarding of instructors as needed


Research & Evaluation

  • Utilize technology and other advancements to streamline and simplify the delivery of the core academic curriculum
  • Conduct research into current pedagogical practices that align with SEO’s goals and propose and implement ideas for integrating new approaches into curriculum and instruction.
  • Research curricula evaluation theories and tools and suggest modifications to current ELA assessment practices
  • Assist with curriculum development and revision to Critical Reading, Critical Writing, Grammar, College Advisory and College Prep Writing units as needed


Recruitment Strategy

  • Develop a targeted recruitment strategy to create and maintain pipelines for high-quality instructor applicants.
  • Initiate and maintain external partnerships

  • Minimum Master’s degree in education, the humanities, or a related field
  • At least two years of experience coaching, leading or managing a successful team with a demonstrated track record of success, preferably in an academic setting
  • At least three years of high school or middle school teaching experience
  • Non-profit management experience outside of a school setting is preferred
  • Experience with academic data collection and analysis
  • Experience with recruitment preferred
  • ELA curriculum writing experience preferred
