Northwest School for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children (NWSDHH) is seeking a teacher to instruct an American Sign Language (ASL) class for deaf and hard of hearing 5th-8th graders, who currently communicate using simultaneous spoken English and Signing Exact English (S.E.E.). Duties include:

  • Planning, implementation, grading and reporting for four, 45-minute ASL classes per week (or the equivalent) for two 16-week semesters
  • Coordination with other middle school faculty & school personnel
  • Parent reporting and conferencing on request
  • Planning & presentation of five-minute ASL performance piece at End of the Year Program

Compensation: Position budgeted at five hours per week at a ratio of three hours of instruction and 2 hours of planning time. Compensation will be commensurate with certification, education and ASL teaching experience, with hourly wage ranging between $25-$40 per hour.

Qualifications: Preference will be given to experienced American Sign Language teachers, active in the deaf community, who demonstrate creative instructional strategies and inclusive attitudes toward hearing loss and communication. Teaching certification is preferred, though not required, as the individual will be working collaboratively with certified Teachers of the Deaf. Experience with middle school and junior high students is preferred.
