Job Summary:

The impact achieved by our Network and our boots-on-the-ground program design expertise gives us a nationally-recognized perspective. We seek to hire the leader of Fahe’s Communications Department, who will develop and execute a communications plan greatly enhancing recognition and ability to bring people together around our work. The candidate will work with smart, dedicated, big-thinking colleagues to support the voice of 50+ member organizations spanning Appalachian Maryland to Alabama. Envisioned Responsibilities:

Strategy and Narrative

  • Develop and execute strategy to further Fahe’s goal, building the American Dream in Appalachia, where people have good jobs, good choices, and good lives.
  • Stay current with best practices of narrative framing and the current national and regional conversations to act on communications opportunities.
  • Be thoughtful about when we speak and when we should listen.

Management

  • Supervise all team members within the Communications Department to create and distribute Fahe content through all channels.
  • Lead department and company-wide alignment with organizational brand and messaging guidelines.
  • Experiment, invest, and evaluate communications return on investment (ROI) in support of goals.
  • Act as a communications consultant and resource to Fahe Member organizations, providing strategic advice, communications support, and rapid response guidance, helping to offer common framing across the region.

Media and Public Affairs

  • Build relationships with national press and related individuals to elevate the voices of our Members in relevant conversations.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • A belief that people should have a good job, good choices, and a good life—no matter who their family is or whether they’re born in New York City, Knoxville, or Hazard, Kentucky
  • Writes clearly, edits efficiently, and possesses ability to think through complex communications scenarios and issues
  • 5+ years of communications experience, ideally within a campaign, corporation, union, or complex (number and variety of constituents) nonprofit entity, and covering areas such as content creation (writing, editing, graphic), marketing ROI management, social media, website, platforms and applications, and press interaction.
  • Experience hiring and leading members of the team with less experience
  • Experience and skill at building relationships, working with others, and cultivating collaboration with a diverse group of people
  • Ability and willingness to travel occasionally

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Interest/ability to discuss and write about economic structural transitions in our country brought on by technological change, concentration of economic activity, public policy and other trends
  • Residence in or around Appalachia, including in Washington, DC
