ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Social Media Manager in the Digital Department of the ACLU's National office in New York, NY.

The ACLU's Digital team focuses on growing our existing audiences and acquiring new audiences by smartly using digital channels to reach and inspire them to take action. We create rich and compelling written, multimedia, and graphic design content that are used in key email, texting, social, merchandise, and paid media programs that help raise money, get our message out into the world, and mobilize existing and new supporters.

The Social Media Manager leads the ACLU's daily social content strategy, setting the cadence, overall calendar, volume of content, and community management goals for the organic social program.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Social Media and Merchandise, the Social Media Manager will own and evolve the ACLU's distinct voice online and ensure it is executed effectively, from Facebook to TikTok. In partnership with the Associate Director, the Social Media Manager will monitor the performance of ACLU social media content and report on it to internal stakeholders, identify experimental content adaptations and lead approvals with other teams as necessary, identify emerging platforms the ACLU may want to join, and set the daily coverage calendar to meet the ACLU's communications, legal, political, and development goals on social. The Social Media Manager will monitor social media conversations that mention the ACLU to assess sentiment and identify what should be amplified or responded to as necessary, reporting to internal stakeholders in Communications or Development. The Social Media Manager will establish and lead organic strategies for promoting merch and identify high-impact development initiatives via organic social media content, in partnership with the Head of Store and our Digital Campaigns team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop long-term vision, goals, strategies, and tactics for the ACLU's social media presence
  • Track and monitor the success of social media and online engagement initiatives towards achieving key goals
  • Position the ACLU as a thought leader on core social media channels
  • Craft and implement creative, multi-faceted social strategies for advocacy, public education, live events, and media campaigns
  • Identify high-impact opportunities to increase the visibility of our advocacy, programmatic, and legislative work, and to generate email list and social media audience growth
  • Cultivate relationships with social media influencers in partnership with the Artist & Ambassadors team and corporate sponsors with the Strategic Partnerships team
  • Guide and advise staff across the organization on effective and engaging opportunities to maximize visibility for ACLU's work
  • Evaluate and recommend new platforms for the ACLU's presence; monitor trends and emerging practices in social media
  • Develop and lead trainings for staff and affiliates across the U.S. on developing their social media presence, best practices, advertising, and audience growth strategies; advise and consult with affiliate staff in onboarding new social media colleagues as needed
  • Manage internal communications with affiliate social media staff, preparing content toolkits with assets and messaging on the social media components of large national initiatives
  • Create and implement online advertising strategies, including social media advertising and advertising on other digital platforms
  • Write and edit social content; maintain a publishing calendar; and post social media content to all channels
  • Provide off-hour coverage, as part of a rotating schedule, for social media and web publishing
  • Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Significant social media experience, ideally for a nonprofit or advocacy organization
  • Excellent verbal, writing and interpersonal communications skills; strong attention to detail, ability to write and deliver work product under deadlines, and commitment to high-quality standards
  • Experience writing and editing persuasive social media content; familiarity with a broad range of social media strategies
  • Experience producing content for professional social media profiles on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter
  • Experience using and evaluating emerging social media platforms
  • Proven track record of working collaboratively with colleagues across departments and functions
  • Basic experience with HTML and Photoshop
  • A demonstrated interest in civil liberties and civil rights, and passion for the work of the ACLU

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven experience in exercising judgment in breaking news and rapid response environments
  • Experience using social media software
  • A strong desire to test and learn - this includes a comfort with failure and a desire to learn from failures in order to improve
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment with a fast-paced and passionate team

COMPENSATION

The annual salary for this position is $91,237 (Level H). This salary is reflective of a position based in New York, NY. This salary will be subject to a locality adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting. Note that most of the salaries listed on our job postings reflect New York, NY salaries, where our National offices are headquartered.
