Position: Movement Organizer; Permanent, Full-time

Organization Overview:

Coleman Advocates is a forty-five year old community organization of Black and Brown parents, youth and children uniting to make San Francisco a city of justice, hope, and opportunity for all. We are focused on eliminating the school-to-prison pipeline, advocating for equitable education and having those most impacted lead. We combine grassroots intergenerational organizing, leadership development and alliance building with policy and budget advocacy to improve the lives of low and moderate-income families, especially families of color. We are a fast-paced, vibrant and racially diverse non-profit organization. 


Primary Responsibilities:

Coleman Advocates is seeking a dynamic person to become the Movement Organizer to support our regional projects and alliances. This is the lead staff role of Coleman’s regional movement building work with a focus on Black organizing and training. The position will work with regional organizations and individuals on decriminalization and equity in education. We are seeking an experienced trainer who can ensure that we develop our regional strategy. 

  • Lead the organization’s efforts in organizing and coordinating throughout the Bay Area region to support the implementation of the removal of police from schools and the elimination of the criminalization of youth.
  • Support the design and carry out solidarity tactics and activities that engage in our regional, statewide and national coalitions. 
  • Support the training and development of youth and parents’ regional political landscape.
  • Represent Coleman to advance our strategy and represent our issues in alliances.
  • Develop and conduct outreach presentations, workshops and other meetings/activities to recruit and engage allies in San Francisco and the greater Bay Area. 
  • Support Coleman’s direct actions and rapid response mobilizations, as needed. 
  • Create and maintain systems and documentation for all outreach, relationship building, and training work.
  • Provide weekly written reports to document activities, updates, and results. 
  • Actively participate in organizational assessments, planning and evaluation processes. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 


Qualifications:

  • At least two years doing movement organizing or training experience. 
  • Experience working for racial and social justice and improving the lives of low income and working class people of color.
  • Demonstrated respect for the culture and leadership of young people and parents. 
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, membership base building organizing models.
  • Experience with leadership development skills training and popular education, including curriculum development.
  • Highly organized; able to achieve goals in multiple work areas within established timelines. 
  • Experience and ease working with people of different class, race, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Flexibility, lots of energy, and an ability to flourish in a fast-paced, action oriented, environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (written and verbal) and relationship-building skills.
  • Can work effectively independently and as part of a team with strong problem solving skills.
  • Takes responsibility, can be initiative in work and feedback.
  • Able to work nights and weekends.


Preferred qualities, skills, experience and personal attributes for this position:

  • Experience with leading policy campaigns
  • College degree 
  • A sense of humor
  • Familiarity with San Francisco Metro area communities, public school community organizing and political landscape
  • Knowledge of education justice policy issues
  • Owns/has access to a car and has a valid driver’s license.
