American Cultural Exchange Service (ACES) is seeking a qualified Resident Director (RD) to work virtually with a group of up to 25 US high school students for an approximately six-week program through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) Program. The students will engage in language and cultural learning through virtual classes, cultural activities and one-on-one peer partners. The RD is required to attend a two-day pre-program training, which will be held virtually in late May to early June, participate in pre-program orientation and community building activities, represent ACES for the duration of the program (late June to mid-August), and submit reports during and immediately after the program.

NSLI-Y is a US State Department sponsored scholarship program funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. American high school students apply for merit-based scholarships to spend a summer, semester, or academic year studying less commonly taught languages. NSLI-Y encourages beginning, intermediate, and advanced language learners with a passion for learning languages, communicating across cultures, and living abroad in the future to apply. Participants are U.S. high school students between 15 and 18 years of age, who have beginner, intermediate or advanced Mandarin language skills.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Have dependable computer(s), reliable high-speed internet connection, and necessary audio/video equipment.
  • Participate in the Resident Director online training for NSLI-Y VSI program. The specific date is announced separately by ACES.
  • Participate in Pre-Program orientation. The specific date is announced separately by ACES.
  • Provide support for students for questions related to the language and culture learning throughout the program via Moodle provided by ACES or via email.
  • Conduct pre-program activities with ACES to foster community building and language learning.
  • “Sit in” each language and culture class.
  • Be available to students during “Office Hours”, a half hour before or a half hour after classes.
  • Be a language resource when students have questions.
  • Be the interpreter for ACES staff when needed during the “Staff Sit in” on program classes and activities.
  • Lead peer tutor activities.
  • Assist students with their culminating project.
  • Participate in and assist Overseas Partner with virtual cultural activities.
  • Deliver weekly one-hour meeting to discuss upcoming cultural activities, lead community building activities, check in about culminating projects, and discuss program housekeeping issues.
  • Submit required reports according to the schedule specified by ACES.
  • Submit Weekly Highlights with video/photos/screenshots and detailed descriptions of activities according to the information in the Resident Director Handbook.
  • Follow all program operating procedures and policies.
  • Participate in the end of program orientation.
  • Create Zoom meetings for weekly RD meetings, office hours, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with teenagers or high school students
  • Ability to counsel teens
  • Genuine understanding of American and Chinese cultures
  • Proficient in Chinese language (Mandarin)
  • Native fluency in English
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Study, work, or extensive travel experience in China
