Position Overview

Our Associate Development Manager will be a creative and collaborative relationship manager who will help build a strong culture of philanthropy at The Mountaineers. Reporting to the Development Director, this dynamic position on The Mountaineers development team plays a key role in achieving the organization’s annual $1.25M+ fundraising goal. Working closely with staff across The Mountaineers and Mountaineers Books, the Associate Development Manager implements a broad suite of fundraising and stewardship strategies that deepen donor engagement with The Mountaineers programs and priorities. While all positions on the Development team work closely together on numerous projects and priorities, the Associate Development Manager’s primary focus areas are annual giving and donor communications. This role supervises the Development Associate role within the Development team.

Key Responsibilities

Gift Club and Annual Giving Management: In partnership with the Development Director, this position is responsible for the success of The Mountaineers annual giving program, including management of the Peak Society (our leadership giving circle), annual giving campaigns, and mid-level donor pipeline development.

  • Peak Society program management: maintain an annual communications plan that bolsters donor engagement, oversee annual gift renewals, and administer benefits associated with the leadership giving program. This role will maintain a portfolio of Peak Society donors with a goal of soliciting and securing new and renewed gifts of $1,000+.
  • Annual Giving program management: produce and manage all aspects of direct mail and online giving campaigns, including the organization’s Year End Appeal and Spring Appeal. Provide guidance and support for Mountaineers Books twice-yearly giving campaigns. Writing responsibilities include but are not limited to mailed and digital appeal letters, curating and editing donor and member stories, campaign wrap-up/impact blogs, and donor acknowledgement letters.
  • Mid-Level Donor Pipeline Management: Maintain a portfolio of donors who annually give between $250-$999, with a goal of soliciting and securing new and increased gifts, especially within annual giving campaigns.
  • Donor Pipeline Management - Tenured Members: maintain an annual communications plan that bolsters donor engagement from 25+ Year members and 50+ Year members, including an annual wellness call campaign and quarterly updates. Partner with Development Manager on annual 25-Year and 50-Year member luncheons.

Development Communications & Donor Stewardship: Responsible for overseeing The Mountaineers year-round strategic development communications calendar, including donor-specific communications and organization-wide development-focused blogs, magazine articles, and impact reports. As a piece of this work, this role manages the development team’s donor stewardship program, including developing and executing systems, processes, and broad-based communications that showcase the impact of donor support.

  • Compose donor communications designed to thank donors in a timely manner, with consideration to level of giving, relationship, and gift designation. Coordinate thanking processes with the Development Associate to ensure holistic and cohesive donor acknowledgments.
  • Produce and manage all aspects of strategic impact reports, including but not limited to: annual report, six Impact Giving blog articles, and four quarterly Mountaineer magazine articles.
  • Collaborate with the Communications team to develop and execute innovative digital roadmaps to drive donations and fundraising engagement with Mountaineers members.

Development Systems and Data Reporting: Responsible for the health and data integrity of the Salesforce CRM database. Regularly develops and runs reports to derive insights into donor acquisition, donor retention, and fundraising performance.

  • Partner with Development Associate to regularly review and update donor information in Salesforce CRM database.
  • Assist in devising and maintaining systems for ensuring that mail, filing, correspondence, and messages are handled in a timely manner.
  • Partner with The Mountaineers IT Manager to identify, test, and implement new Salesforce and Plone (The Mountaineers website platform) opportunities that enhance the donor experience and drive additional fundraising revenue.

Fundraising Leadership and Development Team Support: 

  • Provide supervision and training to Development Associate to ensure excellent performance and growth opportunities.
  • Support fundraising and stewardship events, including but not limited to invitation outreach and follow up, onsite guest registration management, set-up, tear-down, digital and print communications, and gift solicitations.
  • Act as a regular point of contact for donor-related questions. Contact donors about donations as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Maintain confidential member and donor information.
  • Cultural competency and demonstrated ability to work with people of all races, ages, genders, abilities, and economic backgrounds.
  • Relevant education and/or experience in the field of fundraising, including annual giving programs, donor communications, and donor stewardship. 
  • Ability to pass a national criminal background and sex offender check. 

Desired Qualifications

  • Proficient use of Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge, or other similar CRM database.
  • Proven strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, including the ability to communicate empathetically in all interactions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once and prioritize tasks as needed.
  • Outdoor experience and passion for outdoor activities significantly helps with understanding depth and breadth of organizational activities.

Work Environment 

This role is based in Seattle, WA, at The Mountaineers program center in Magnuson Park. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, this position is currently 100% remote (work from home) until September 7, 2021. Following September 7, this position is expected to have a regular presence in our Seattle-based program center, with opportunities for a partial remote work schedule. The Mountaineers will provide a laptop computer for remote access. For remote work, The Associate Development Manager is expected to have a suitable remote work environment, including broadband internet access, to accomplish their job duties.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours, as necessary.
  • Must have regular and reliable transportation for local travel and willing to travel when necessary.
  • Occasional local travel expected.
  • Ability to lift/move 20 pounds regularly and up to 40 pounds occasionally on event days.
  • On events days (from setup to tear down):
  • Ability to stand 4 or more hours continuously.
  • Ability to walk 4 or more hours continuously.
  • Ability to work greater than a 10-hour day.
