The History and English Departments at Emma Willard School seek an enthusiastic and dedicated instructor to join both departments for the 2018-19 school year. The full-time History and English instructor will report to the History Department Chair and the English Department Chair. S/he will teach two or three sections of English I, II, and/or III, and one or two sections of ninth- or tenth-grade history courses including Classical Mediterranean History and Contemporary World History. The instructor will collaborate regularly with other teachers of all levels to ensure an integrated and cohesive English and History curricula. S/he will be responsible for co-curricular activities (e.g. coaching, after school physical education, advising a student activity group, etc.) that fill the needs of the school and hopefully, intersect with the interest or expertise of instructor. The history faculty teach students to think historically, following the “five Cs” outline by the American Historical Association: change over time, context, causality, contingency and complexity. The English faculty focus on critical reading and writing skills, emphasizing close reading of fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction; in writing, the English department privileges a process-oriented approach. Dedication to the holistic wellness of students is essential, as is ability and comfort in frequent communication with students’ advisors and parents.

The ideal candidate would hold a master’s degree in history and/or English and a minimum of three years of teaching experience. The candidate should demonstrate excellence in course design, planning and implementation. S/he should have a strong desire to contribute to a collaborative faculty. The candidate should have patience, enthusiasm and the ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines. The candidate should be a strong advocate for all-girls’ education. Finally, this individual should approach their work with a sense of humor and joy. Special consideration may be given to candidates with interest and ability in athletic coaching.
