The Cambridge Community Center seeks a manager for one of its signature programs, the Cambridge Winter Farmers Market. The Center requires a well-organized, service-oriented person with community-building savvy to begin immediately and lead this successful market into its seventh season of operation and beyond.


Responsibilities include:

  • Vendor recruitment and ongoing relations
  • Programming of special activities & weekly performances
  • Generating publicity in advance and throughout the market season to ensure strong attendance
  • Maintaining the market’s website and social media
  • Budgeting & bookkeeping
  • Fundraising
  • Market day operations
  • Maintaining excellent relationships with city officials
  • Conducting outreach to surrounding community groups, school & neighbors
  • Creating a welcoming environment for all


Skills needed include:  

  • Ability to attend to the big picture and the details of a multifaceted, weekly market
  • Managing multiple aspects of planning and coordination in parallel
  • Strong verbal, written and social communication skills
  • Comfortable with Excel, Google docs and forms, email marketing programs and social media site management
  • Budget management
  • Supervising market staff and volunteers


Hours, Wages, Location:

  • Begin working immediately on a part time basis for an average of 20 hours per week or as needed to be ready for opening day on January 5th, 2019
  • The market manager sets their own schedule of days and times for the advance work, but business day hours are required for many duties
  • The manager may work at the Cambridge Community Center or from home for most tasks
  • The market manager must be available to work at the market itself on Saturdays from January 5th - April 7th from 8:00am-4:00pm
  • The manager is a part-time, hourly employee of the Cambridge Community Center
  • Pay commensurate with experience


Details of duties:  

Vendor Relations

  • Applications - devise, distribute, receive, chase for completion, vet, choose via Manage My Market website
  • Liaise with Inspectional Services at City regarding Temporary Food Service permitting
  • Stalls bookings - schedule, map and keep all spaces full every week
  • Communications - provide logistics info, inform vendors of schedule changes, policies, events, and request joint publicity
  • Maintain compliance with market policies


Music and activity bookings

  • Publicize for volunteer musicians, family friendly activities and community group information tables
  • Vet, book and confirm all musicians, activities, groups
  • Coordinate with CCC staff for overlapping programming
  • Host annual Get Growing Day on the final market day


Outreach and Publicity  

  • Design, order and obtain flyers, banners and other promotional materials
  • Ongoing website updates and management
  • Continue and grow ongoing social media presence
  • Weekly design and distribution of newsletter and various list serve updates
  • Design and distribution of press releases


Budget & Bookkeeping

  • Make annual projections based on previous year and forward plans
  • Track and receive payments from all vendors
  • Liaise with the Center’s bookkeeper on account keeping
  • Weekly SNAP data entry for vendor reimbursement
  • Ensure monthly SNAP reimbursement check delivery to vendors


Liaison to the Cambridge SNAP Match Coalition

  • Actively participate in this coalition of public health and hunger relief advocates, city planners and market managers to raise SNAP-matching funds, increase outreach and streamline processes at three Cambridge farmers markets
  • Attend monthly meetings and fulfill agreed upon duties


Operations

  • Obtain all needed supplies
  • Ensure that SNAP/EBT equipment & Market Link operates reliably
  • Troubleshoot phone line, electric, heat issues in gym on market days
  • Maintain & track attendance data, SNAP usage data & budgeted expenditures
  • Ensure market space is properly set up and cleaned up each market day


Volunteer Recruitment and Supervision

  • Recruit volunteers for market day set up and break down
  • Provide guidance to volunteers on market days
  • Recruit and supervise interns as needed
