Job: Black and African-American Communities Services Coordinator 

Reports to: Director of Domestic Violence Services

Classification: Full-time, exempt from FLSA; Participation in 24-hour hotline rotation as primary and/or back-up staff as assigned; other evening and weekend hours will occasionally be required.

Salary: $37, 000 annually. Additional pay for overnight hotline shifts.

Additionally, Compass Center is the only Orange County resource for comprehensive domestic violence crisis services. Compass Center is also closely connected to Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, offering sexual health programming and empowerment programs related to safe relationships in middle and high school health classes. 


Position Summary: The Black and African American Communities Services Coordinator will be responsible for increasing capacity to meet the needs of Black and African American survivors of domestic violence in a culturally-responsive and trauma-informed manner and to raise community awareness of services for Black survivors. This position provides direct services to victims of domestic violence and supports staff, advocate volunteers, and interns and is supervised by the Director of Domestic Violence Services.


Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Client Engagement

·    Conduct listening sessions/focus groups to assess program effectiveness and improve services to Black and African American survivors.

·    Maintain and expand meaningful relationships with community agencies to ensure that agency practices and policies meet the needs of Black and African American communities in Orange County.

·    Support community engagement efforts and culturally appropriate and trauma-informed professional trainings throughout Orange County to audiences who are, or who work with, Black and African American survivors.

·    Contribute to coordinated community response efforts including attending the Domestic Violence Sexual Assault Response Committee and facilitating a quarterly subcommittee of service providers working with Black and African American survivors/victims.

·    Ensure that agency materials are culturally sensitive and relevant.

 

Direct Client Services

·    Coordinate, plan, and implement a support group program for Black and African-American survivors.

·    Provide direct domestic violence crisis services both in person and remotely to Compass Center clients. This includes daytime and overnight hotline shifts as assigned and on-going program-specific client contact.

·    Provide referrals and support relevant to Compass Center and community-based services. 

·    Maintain proper documentation of all client contacts.


Program Development and Capacity Building

·    Review best practices for agencies providing domestic violence services to Black and African American clients and work with the team to implement changes.

·    Participate in program evaluation and make suggestions on how Compass Center can improve its services for Black and African American clients.

·    Along with all staff, serve as an active participant in Compass Center’s work to become an anti-racist organization.

·    Develop culturally appropriate support group materials.

·    Support other Compass Center domestic violence program areas as needed.

·    Assist in recruiting and training hotline and support group volunteers. Training topics include discussions of oppression, intersectionality, violence, racism, and white supremacy.  

·    Work with other staff to research, develop, and deliver trainings for Compass Center staff and volunteers focused on implementing best practice and culturally response services.


Administration

·    Responsible for the preparation of report(s) as required by supervisor and/or Executive Director.

·    Timely and consistent attendance at staff and program meetings.

·    Responsible for participating in the on-going maintenance of a clean, organized and welcoming facility and environment.

·    Other activities as assigned by supervisor.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree preferred though equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Experience providing services to victims of interpersonal violence or underserved populations.
  • Have a solid understanding of interpersonal violence and its effect on individuals and families.
  • Possess working knowledge of the unique barriers faced by Black, African American, and Caribbean survivors and the impact these barriers play in reaching out for support and connecting with community resources and the justice system.
  • Exhibit a passion for building trusting and empowering relationships with survivors and community partners.
  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and the ability to work with diverse groups.
  • Experience with community organizing, coalition building, training, etc. preferred.
  • Possess empathic communications skills that can be adapted for survivors with various needs.
  • Enjoy working with a team of other committed and passionate staff members.
  • Ability to work on projects and assist clients both remotely and in person. 
  • Ability to perform job duties with a high degree of initiative and professionalism, autonomy, demonstrated sound judgment, and outstanding communication skills.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, and reliable vehicle preferred.
