Director of International Mechanisms

 

USHRN Mission: The US Human Rights Network is a national network of organizations and individuals working to strengthen a human rights movement and culture within the United States led by the people most directly impacted by human rights violations. USHRN works to realize human rights by:

·Engaging, connecting and mobilizing communities to uphold and defend human rights and hold government accountable

·Building the capacity and leadership of grassroots groups

·Facilitating effective collective action to secure the long-term structural change to achieve justice and fully realize human rights

·Raising the visibility of local human rights concerns nationally, and internationally

 

International Mechanisms Director

Reports to: Executive Director

Location: Atlanta, GA or Telecommute 

 

Position Overview: The Director of International Mechanisms will lead organizational and membership engagement with International and Regional human rights mechanisms. The Director will advise the Executive Director to determine the strategic direction of international/regional mechanisms work that advances the USHRN mission and assists in cultivating and securing donor support. 

 

The Director will identify opportunities for national and international policy impact. The Director will manage the organizations international mechanisms calendar and set priorities that promote grassroots engagement in international reporting and hearing opportunities, UN special mandate holder visits, and national human rights advocacy. The Director will work closely with the Media Strategy team to highlight and advance a people centered human rights movement in the US.

 

The Director will oversee the coordination of network task forces, working groups, the work of the USHRNs International Mechanisms Coordinating Committee (IMCC), facilitate the participation of members and allies using human rights mechanisms and domestic accountability structures to advance strategic human rights demands.  

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

International Mechanisms

·Lead organizational and membership engagement with International and Regional human rights mechanisms.

·Determine, with the Executive Director, the strategic direction of international/regional mechanisms work that advances the USHRN mission

·Engage and facilitate participation of groups in the use of human rights treaty reviews, Inter-American Commission on Human Rights hearings, and community human rights hearings;

·Liaise with federal level policy making/implementing entities to push a human rights agenda within the U.S.;

·Capacity to coordinate with other UN, NGO, state and/or government stakeholders and advocate for respect for human rights in various fora

·Good research and analytical skills, including the ability to identify, gather, verify, evaluate and integrate relevant political, ethnic, gender-based, social, economic and other human rights-related developments from a variety of sources

·Manage project budgets related to human rights mechanisms work as needed;

·Coordinate work of the International Mechanisms Coordinating Committee (IMCC);

·Work with Taskforce co-chairs to schedule, manage logistics, plan and support Taskforce meetings and implementation of Taskforce work plans;

·Coordinate work of the National Coalition on the Human Rights to Water and Sanitation;

·Coordinate work of the Human Rights Cities Alliance;

·Organize and/or work with other organizations to plan 1-2 human rights hearings (tribunals) as appropriate;

 

Membership Support

·Coordinate closely on a regular basis with Membership Director and USHRN Executive Director on outreach and education activities with members and partners

· Support Membership Director in outreach to grassroots groups, youth groups, community organizations, faith based groups, advocacy groups and other organizations engaged in U.S.-based human rights and social justice work;

·Support Membership Director in cultivating relationships with community organizations and local leaders who can assist with organizing outreach events;


Human Rights Education, Leadership, and Capacity Building

·Design, implement and evaluate leadership and educational programming for members including workshops and webinars

·Support the creation of workshops on human rights education, organizing strategies and advocacy to support leadership and capacity development with members

·Deliver human rights trainings that intersect with issues relevant to network membership

·Create advocacy, organizing and outreach materials as needed;


Communications Support

·Support communications staff by ensuring events are photographed or recorded

·Coordinate support for organizational members through amplifying their strategic work

·Represent USHRN as a spokesperson with external audiences and stakeholders and manage relationships with key partners


Other duties and expectations include:

·Work some evenings and weekends

·Travel as necessary

 

Qualifications: The USHRN is looking for a dynamic individual with demonstrated commitment to human rights values – including participatory decision making, building multi-lingual spaces, anti-racism, anti-sexism and support of LGBTQ communities. Specific qualifications and required experience include:


·A M.S.or equivalent in Human Rights, law, political science, international relations, social sciences or a related area or B.S. degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree

· At least 5 years Domestic (U.S) organizing experience, with proven track record of successful organizing efforts;

·Direct experience interfacing with international mechanisms- UN Agencies, Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures, OAS or other bodies

·Familiarity with human rights standards, principles, laws and mechanisms, as well as social justice advocacy;

·Strong writing skills, strong verbal and interpersonal communications skills; Strong organizational skills. Must be detail oriented;

·Prior experience in designing, conducting and evaluating trainings for community members that are responsive to cultural, language, and educational differences;.

·Experience working in racially, economically and linguistically diverse communities in the U.S.;

·Ability to thrive in fast paced, stimulating campaign environment, and to work as a team player;

·Capacity to coordinate multiple tasks, activities and projects successfully. Must be highly motivated self-starter who is committed to making a difference and to ensuring the success of tall projects in a small, fast paced, non-profit office with limited support staff;

· Ability and willingness to travel, and work on weekends and evenings;

·Fluent in English (required)

·Belief and agreement with USHRN guiding principles; and



Preferred Qualifications:

·Spanish language skills


Compensation: Salary range is $60,000 to $70,000, depending on experience, and is full time. Generous benefits package includes health, dental, and vision insurance, employer-supported pension plan, short and long-term disability insurance, life insurance, and generous vacation, holiday, personal and sick days. This is a full-time position and could be located in Atlanta or Telecommute.
