Description

Guatemala Housing Alliance is a small non-profit that works with some of the more disadvantaged families in the indigenous villages around Lake Atitlan. Through our Construction Program we build new homes employing local sustainable methods and materials as well as installing concrete floors and replacing decrepit roofs in otherwise viable homes. Through our Education Program we provide scholarships for students from the primary grades through university, tutors as needed, and enrichment workshops along the way.

We are looking for a Director capable of promoting these goals in an always challenging environment while adapting on the fly. To be effective, it will be necessary for the candidate to be comfortable working primarily in Tz'utujil communities with very limited access to amenities. A basic understanding of rural indigenous village dynamics and challenges going into the position will smooth out the inevitable acclimation process.

GHA often hosts volunteers to lend a hand on our construction projects and also encourages sponsors to support our students' progress so applicants should be capable of communicating effectively both in English and Spanish. The Director will also be responsible for managing the office and so should be comfortable with Word, Excel, and social media, too.

Applicants are encouraged to visit our website for a fuller understanding of our modest but varied efforts.

Benefits

The Director will be provided a modest dwelling adjacent to the office at no cost. Additionally, the Director will receive two weeks paid vacation after one year and four weeks after the second year. For every year in the position, the Director will receive an additional stipend of $1000 to be used as they like (travel, health insurance, etc.).

The greatest benefit will be an appreciation for the very tangible impact you will have on the lives of the beneficiaries and, equally, that they will have on you.

Level of Language Proficiency

Applicant should be either a native English or native Spanish speaker with an advanced competence in the other.
